But March 17 isn't the first day to vote, it's actually the last.

Here is everything you need to make sure your voice is heard in the IL-09 primary election:

BETWEEN NOW AND MARCH 17:
1L-09 VOTING DEADLINES

Right now: Voter registration and Vote by Mail applications are open in Chicago, Cook, McHenry and Lake County.

February 5: Vote by Mail ballots start mailing. Early voting opens at the Lake County Clerk's office & McHenry County Election Center.

February 12: Downtown Chicago early voting opens at 137 S State St and 69 W Washington St.

February 17: Last day for regular in-person voter registration.
February 18: Grace period registration and voting begin. Bring 2 forms of ID. Must be 18 by Election Day, a US citizen, and live in-district for 30 days.

March 1: Last day to register to vote online through the Illinois State Board of Elections.

March 2: Early voting opens at permanent polling places across Chicago, Cook County, McHenry and Lake County.

March 12: Last day to apply for a Vote by Mail ballot.

March 16: Last day of early voting. Last day to request a mail ballot in person.

March 17: Election Day. This is the last day to vote. Make it count.

IL-09 VOTING DETAILS

RIGHT NOW:
Voter Registration and Vote By Mail applications for the City of Chicago, Cook County, and McHenry and Lake County are open!

FEBRUARY 5:
First day of early voting; and first day that the election authority can mail a vote by mail ballot to registered voters. People can also vote early at the county clerk's office in Lake and McHenry County!

FEBRUARY 12:
Downtown Chicago early voting begins for the March 17, 2026
Midterm Primary Election at two locations: 137 South State Street and 69 W. Washington Street.

FEBRUARY 17:
Last day for regular in-person voter registration within the offices of the election authority. Grace period registration and voting will be available after this date.

FEBRUARY 18:
First day of the grace period voter registration and voting at the office of the election authority or a location designated for this purpose by the election authority.

* Registration requires 2 forms of ID, being 18 by general election day, 30 days of residence at an in-district residence, and U.S. citizenship.

MARCH 1:
Last day for people to register to vote through the State Board of Elections' website.
* This applies to all counties; from here on, voter registration is solely grace period registration or via mail.

MARCH 2:
First day for early in-person voting at permanent polling places other than the office of the election authority. This applies in Lake County, Cook County and the City of Chicago. Early in-person voting also begins in Chicago, across all wards.

MARCH 12:
Last day for election authority to receive applications for vote by mail ballot.
* From here on, grace period in-person registration is the only method of registration.

MARCH 16:
Last day for early voting. Also last day for someone to request a mail-in ballot in person at the office of the election authority.

MARCH 17:
ELECTION DAY! THIS ISN'T THE FIRST DAY TO VOTE, IT'S THE LAST.
Last day of grace period voting and registration in the office of the election authority or at locations designated by the election authority. Contact election authority to find out availability of grace period registration and voting in the polling place on Election Day.
* Grace period voter registration requirements stay the same, but polling places may have a limited number of grace period applications or limited capacity so some sites may not provide this service.
