Squirrels "steal" (eat and damage) pears because they are a nutrient-rich food source. People try to protect pear trees with barriers like mesh bags or using repellents. Squirrels may bite pears while still on the tree or eat fallen fruit, and their presence can significantly reduce a pear harvest
