According to Motoi Okamoto, Mini-Game Director for Super Mario 64 DS, Shigeru Miyamoto would start midnight crunch sessions for the game's development by walking into the office and announcing "It's Mario time."
"In those days, Miyamoto would come to us at 11 PM, after he finished all of his board-member work, and say, "It's Mario time." At that point, we'd start a planning meeting that would run until 2 AM. At that point, Miyamoto would go home, leaving us with the words, "You should return home soon, for your health." Over the next two or three hours, we'd write the game design documents and summarize the instructions for our artists and programmers. It was the craziest crunch time that I've ever experienced in my development career. But if the God of Games was working so much, could we give up? The ending to the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels will become corrupted simply by Mario being too close to the right edge of the screen. While Mario will remain normal, Peach will become an uncanny jumble of corrupted graphics.

In 2023, I posted about a bizarre Dolce & Gabbana shirt featuring Mario standing in a beam of light alongside text praising him. I have tracked down the source of the image, which was a splash page in the E3 2000 brochure. Now the venerated Mario can be seen in high quality.

In Mario Party, landing on a Bowser Space while having no coins or stars normally results in Bowser taking pity on the players' bad fortune and giving them free coins instead. However, there has sadly been a trend of Bowser becoming steadily less compassionate over time, as shown by this graph.

In Mario & Luigi: Brothership, Starlow bizarrely claims herself to be "an eight-headed beauty". This is actually a mistranslation. She actually refers to eight-head body proportions, used traditionally for fashion illustrations, instead of literally claiming to have 8 heads.

In Super Mario World, Mario can use lava to create life from nothing. Throwing an empty Koopa shell upward on the frame it would sink into lava will make it turn into a living Koopa. It can then be extracted from the shell and the process repeated indefinitely for infinite life.

In Paper Mario, Mario normally jumps onto Lakilester's cloud to use the Cloud Nine move. However, a small cute detail occurs if Mario is asleep or otherwise unable to jump onto the cloud, which causes Lakilester to gingerly pick him up from the ground himself instead.

In Paper Mario, Mario has 8 partners. However, there are enough unused and scrapped partners referenced in the game's files to make another full party. Here is a glimpse of an alternate reality with all of Mario's potential partners.
Meet Mario's Potential Party! Goompa Joins Mario as a follower in the finished game, but has a lot of data referencing being a full partner. He even has four cut moves: One-Man Fool, Mumble, Lecture, and Awaken. Goombaria The unused partner closest to being implemented, she even has an unused partner list entry. Sadly, she has no known abilities. Twink Normally Peach's partner, but has an unused entry in Mario's partner list. Seen in pre-release screenshots. Ordinary Koopa Likely replaced by Kooper. In a test room in the finished game, used as partner placeholder. Bandit Only the species is known. Ninji Boy Nothing is known about Ninji Boy except the line "HE CAN LOWER THE BLOCK", which was presumably his ability. Five colored Ninji sprites are unused in the code, one of them could have been him. Chain Chomp Only the species is known. Curiously, a Chain Chomp partner was planned for Paper Mario: Sticker Star, but also cut. Red The most mysterious partner, only his name レッド ("Red" in English in katakana) is given. The only character referred to as such in the finished Japanese text is Red Ninjakoopa, so unless the character was entirely original, it could have been him. In Mario Kart 8/Deluxe, the Dragon Driftway takes place on a giant dragon based on Gobblegut from Super Mario Galaxy 2. The full dragon is never seen in-game all at once. Here is the track model with everything but the dragon removed.
