🧪IMPORTANT! This graphic explains how science all over the US is funded. Congress approved a 2% increase in the #NIH budget for FY 26.

Buried in the bill-
Shift of ~40% of grants to MYF. This will still result in a 35% DECREASE in the NUMBER of grants funded per yr.

Russel Vought is behind this.

I asked AI to describe my contribution to the mitochondrial field. Received this. It's quite impressive and pretty accurate.

Because we have a ton of adequately skilled American faculty and #researchers training in #nephrology (lot of work, relatively poor pay) and #Geriatrics (relatively poor pay, #ageism rampant in US) and basic #medical science (the paylines from #NIH were cut by ~50%)
Striking nativist editorializing by the federal judge who just upheld the $100,000 tax on high-skill immigrants.

She opines that it’s “troubling” that universities hire talent from abroad at all, instead of only native grads.

Then admits (!) that opinion is irrelevant (So why write it? Venting?)

Mitochondria are among nature's most remarkable gifts to us. These tiny powerhouses are essential for providing
energy and stand at the forefront of anti-aging science, serving as the driving
force behind strategies to promote healthy longevity.

I wonder if the limiting of NIH proposals to 6 per PI annually will help or hurt? Less potential funding should increase PI oversight through smaller groups and less time required for proposal writing. However, this might increase pressures to demonstrate...

Well, this is an utter disaster for science.

This gutting of peer review is very likely driven by Project 2025/OMB/Vought, very likely is about funding junk science, and very likely is coming for #NIH and biomedical research next.

This documentary captures the destruction of the past year at NIH and so many agencies. It’s an important watch.
If you’ve ever worked inside a federal agency, or know someone who has, you already know this kind of purging weakens our country.

HEIST documents how institutions are dismantled from the inside out.
