Any antique doll fans here? I’m trying to learn more about my nana’s doll. 1940’s, bisque head-and-shoulders, no joints, bisque limbs, synthetic wig, inset eyes (not painted on), closed mouth. Twin face makers mark. She looks like a Kester or Bradley doll to me, but I’m having trouble confirming.

2003: Small Press at SDCC. Approved a week before the show, I made a zine describing my in-progress comics & promoting my webcomic. I had buttons & magnets for sale, & shared the 6' table w/ friends. 2024: A2CAF, where I filled my 3' w/ comics, zines, stickers, plush, and prints!

It's (and I'm not making this up) National Cartoonist Day. I will accept gifts and tribute.
Out of the way you swine, a cartoonist is coming! Kliban's classic cartoon.

Re: small press/publisher agreements, if your advance is $2k, you're gonna see those royalties much sooner than if your advance were $50k from a traditional publisher. At least small publishers are forthcoming about what the costs to be made back are. 50/50 is a GOOD deal.

Screenshot of an Instagram story by Bianca Xunise, it includes a photo of them in a hospital bed. The text reads: "Hey y'all I kinda got hit by a car yesterday. My head and my drawing hand took the worst lf it. As a result I had to drop some gigs I needed so I can rest and recover. I'm taking a financial hit rn I could really use some support. If you can throw something my way to help bridge the gap and some after care that'll be awesome"

Fun fact: if you're buying from a creator on etsy, you can reduce their etsy selling fees from 6.5% to 2.5% by ordering via 'shopname.etsy.com' instead of 'etsy.com/shopname' or searching from the main site. It costs you the same but the creator makes more

With most small publishers, you almost never see royalties even on a modest seller; it's almost always the case that while they take 50% of the profits (larger publishers give you a percentage of cover, which is harder to creatively doctor), 100% of the costs, not 50, are deducted from your end.

Here is a handout I made for my kid’s class last week, when I went in to talk to them about making books. I Frankensteined together a bunch of art I already had to make it, and filled other stuff in. But it was a big hit, so I’m sharing it here in case you know any kids interested in making books!
Let’s make books handout for kids, detailing various roles in making books; author, illustrator, editor, designer, marketing/publicity, librarians/booksellers/teachers and finally readers. Two worksheets, “be a writer” with a writing mad lib, and “be an illustrator” with some drawing prompts. Two more worksheets, “be an editor” with editorial marks to practice on some editable sentences, and “be a cover designer” with four books needing covers. Two final handouts: “be a librarian, bookseller or teacher” with six kids and six books to match, and “be a reader” with preferences in genre and types of books to narrow your reading preferences to help find more books to enjoy.
