The German DPAs have issued their position on proposed GDPR reform, expressing reservations about the modification to the definition of personal data. They emphasize that such change could affect the fundamental right to data protection as well as alter the scope of the GDPR.

There is a tremendous difference between parcels you can’t look into and modern online platforms.

The time of neutral platforms has come and gone, now they fully control the displaying and engagement for profit or their interests. Legal privileges aren’t appropriate anymore for that.
Finally had a chance to write up the CJEU's Russmedia ruling which appears to make it literally *impossible* to run a website in the EU that allows any user content. I just don't see how compliance is possible. At all. Hat tip to @daphnek.bsky.social for calling it to my attention.

Impartiality and independence are essential to roles in the second line of defense because without them the role loses credibility and effectiveness. The level of hostility and opposition the requirement faces is a strong indicator of organisational maturity: high hostility signals low maturity.

Interesting example of unintended consequences. I completely get how problematic access request can be, however, they somehow also scale with how problematic processing and retention is.

Perhaps in the end we went a little of the deep end with keeping data, and this shows on these requests.

GDPR reform discussions are still shaped by lobbyists, not those enforcing it daily. Any change (good or bad) demands massive effort, prolongs uncertainty, and undoes hard-won harmonization.

Real improvement should focus on true harmonization across member states—not chasing perfection.

So I wrote something on the placement of DPOs under GDPR in the IIA three lines because this practical issue has way too few published opinions.

I'd love any feedback on how different setups played out for you.
