Every time someone makes a strawman fallacy when I'm trying to discuss paleo all I can think of is the "I like pancakes" "so you hate waffles?" Twitter post. nothing else captures the sheer confusion and stupidness of that argument.

Papiliomaris kluessendorfae, first reported in 1985 as the Waukesha "Butterfly Animal", was recently described as a strange bivalved arthropod with three pairs of large, feathery appendages. Some reports indicate it could reach up to 20cm wide.

Illustration of a trio of lemon sharks swimming in a shallow turquoise ocean over white sand. The topmost shark seems to be looking toward the viewer, a pair of remora attached to their side.

Multiple lobopodian fossils from the Chengjiang Biota of Cambrian China, including a specimen of two Diania cactiformis, have been found stacked directly on top of each other.

Perhaps a snapshot into the courtship and reproduction of these ancient arthropod ancestors?

Happy Croctober everyone! We just finished the prototype Deinosuchus schwimmeri, named in honor of David Schwimmer (not not THAT one)

Holy crap this croc is BIG!

The Triassic was a time of weird reptiles of every description.

This is one of the more recent finds: Mirasaura from France. It's one of the drepanosaurs, an odd group of arboreal reptiles with superficially bird-like heads and, in some cases, equally superficially feather-like appendages.
A slightly cartoony illustration of a Mirasaura sitting on a mossy tree branch. The lizard-like animal has a long snout resembling a bird's beak, large eyes and a massive crest on its' back somewhat resembling a birds' wing feathers, as if someone stuck an entire wader's wing into his back. The animal has large eyes and it looking behnd him at a passing dragonfly.

Just barely making it for September’s #NearbyNature2025, here’s the Mexican Long-nosed Armadillo. Formerly known as a northern subspecies of the recently-split Nine-banded Armadillo, this is the only Xenarthran native to Alabama today. They are mostly nocturnal insectivores. #wildlife #alabama

I am no longer involved in The Sanctum or any projects involving Omar Lagarda González, aka The Darknix.

Letter of Disaffiliation

To whom it may concern,

I am ending all involvement with The Sanctum, an art project that has produced models and artwork of mesozoic vertebrates, and was in the planning stages of making a documentary about mesozoic vertebrates.

I have learned that the project’s leader Omar Lagarda González (aka Darknix) made inappropriate and unwanted sexual advances online to a person whom he knew to be 16 years old.

I will no longer be involved in any collaborative art, science communication, or research projects with Omar Lagarda González. Any further use of my name in relation to such projects is without my permission.

Renanalysis of Alwalkeria maleriensis restricts hypodigm to femora and reinterprets as pterosauromorph. Authors establish new genus Alickmeron with no justification - same holotype and type species as Alwalkeria. Alickmeron is therefore an objective synonym of Alwalkeria.

some maps I made for the Kayenta formation and Morrison formation surface exposures from a bunch of data. I would love some corrections. The red in Colorado in the first image represents the area I have not found a map showing the specific kayenta exposure (if anyone knows a map i would love it)
a simple map of the border between Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico showing the location of a group of rocks. a map of the Western Central US from Arizona to Montana showing places where the Morrison formation can be found.

#SciArtSeptember Day 25: Tireless

Some shark species sleep on the move, either by switching off each hemisphere of their brain, or by activating nerve centers in the spinal cord, allowing them to continue swimming and breathing.

It's #FossilFriday from the field! The other day, I was checking out a microsite in the upper Judith River Formation and stumbled upon this perfect dinosaur toe.

It is definitely from an ornithischian, probably from one of the many ceratopsian species here

Belantsea.

A very weird cartilaginous fish from the Bear Gulch Formation. The candy-striped fish in the foreground are Aesopichthys, the others are Discoserra. The squid-like cephalopods are Syllipsimopodi.

Another piece for the shark book.

Thanks to the kittens for their help.
