Federal workers across the country are not getting paychecks this week. Food banks are feeling the strain of federal employees who need help feeding their families.

About a month ago, the Trump administration got rid of the de minimis exemption, whereby packages valued under $800 could slide in without import duties. Now there's a backlog as the government can't process all of this paperwork, leading to UPS just destroying packages

Whistling when ICE is about to kidnap someone for no reason is incredibly effective. They know what they are doing is wrong and will scatter in the wind when too many witnesses gather.

Many people noticed plainlanguage.gov was migrated to digital.gov/topics/plain..., where it has been *consolidated*.

Our friends at @alt18f.bsky.social posted a version of the original content at plainlanguage.18f.org

Unlike other sites that have disappeared, this one just changed.

“More than 2,300 armed National Guard troops are currently patrolling the District unlawfully. That unprecedented deployment is inflicting irreparable harm to the District’s sovereignty, its economy, and public safety.”
The Trump administration lobbied Wednesday evening for a freeze of Washington D.C.’s attempt to eject a couple thousand National Guard from the district.

We are organizing tirelessly to build another world and save lives along the way. But we need your help. Will you join us and tell a friend?
At Moonlight, we are leaning on this history to build new power. Thousands of federal workers are being pushed out of work today, but their skills are not lost, and their vision must not be silenced. If we all pitch in some, we can leverage these skills to stay safe and build big power together.
In the USSR, Ukrainians set up freedom schools to teach kids real history to circumvent propaganda. In Brazil, the MST movement set up “country stores” to provide fresh food to reach more people. In Delhi, the opposition party built medical clinics to care for residents amidst skyrocketing costs.
All over the world, when a small group of elites have taken over governments and killed health and food programs, the parallel response has been highly effective.
When oligarchs gut rural hospitals, we’ll organize medical clinics with union nurses. When politicians defund schools, we’ll distribute books. When industry billionaires gut the DOT, we’ll fill in potholes.

We can’t replace whole agencies, but we can reduce harm and reveal corruption.
At Moonlight we are building and supporting parallel institutions: projects and organizations by the people that provide services and resources that government SHOULD be offering to challenge dominant structures and reveal their corruption.
The US govt is now shutdown, Republicans keep illegally dismantling basic services while Dems host pressers and send angry letters.

Our leaders have failed us and we need a new approach.

The Moonlight Movement is organizing a fresh creative strategy to fight back, but we need your help, a thread ➡️
By seeking to make authoritarianism bipartisan in DC, Muriel Bowser has made herself an international disgrace.

Top leaders of both parties in DC are now collaborating to drag dads out of car windows and throw moms down on pavement. Meanwhile 80% of DC residents oppose the occupation.

As Congress has frozen budgets and attempted to learn local laws, DC residents are growing their power. DC will be free, but we need YOUR help. Join the fight to free dc. More info on how in previous posts in yellow 🙏🙏
Don’t scoff because you haven’t seen it. Free DC is organizing residents door to door and ward by ward ON THE GROUND. This is not some social media gimmick, but rather bold and tenacious organizing of people where they live.
DC needs statehood and basic freedoms and protections for residents now more than ever. But even before having those, DC residents are NOT backing down. People have been organizing under the banner Free DC this whole year.
However, capitals are also often sites of tremendous resistance too - this year the capital has been a source of tremendous mutual aid for immigrants, peaceful protest, community organizing, defense of institutions and more!
Capital cities have consistently been focal flashpoints for authoritarian regimes demonstrate power, tighten control, and squash opposition, DC is no exception to this rule.
The ongoing takeover of DC and its lack of power is a threat to the entire country’s democratic foundations. History shows that if a dictator takes over the capital, it’s much harder to stop him.
RIGHT NOW is likely a pivotal moment in US history. Dictators almost always take over capital cities, usually by force, to assert power and control.

A thread to help make sense of this moment and how we fight back:
