Great to see so much support at today's public hearing for this much-needed project.
NEW: Calgary city council approves the zoning to make way for Minto’s proposed residential development at the former Viscount Bennett School site.

Note: Vote was 9-5 as Coun. Chu meant to vote against and it was changed on the record.

When are we going to stop treating housing like it's pollution? This is an appalling outcome.
There are always consequences to Council decisions.

Today, with one vote, 7 Councillors voted down policy amendments that would have enabled more than 650 homes to be built.

650 homes for 650 families today.

And countless more in the future.

Nerdfighters for more neighbours!
The take I am most certain of that gets me in the most trouble is just "The reason homes are so expensive is because there are not enough of them, so we really really really need to build more of them."

One wonders who our city council actually represents?
🛑🏠In voting to block 1,100 new homes in Calgary yesterday, eight housing gatekeepers on Calgary city councillors sided with the same vocal minority of NIMBYs who previously opposed bus rapid transit to their southwest communities.

There are many reasons that Calgary doesn't have enough truly-affordable housing, but public hearings like the one happening right now are a big part of it. www.youtube.com/live/L9CBK7Q...

Thanks to everyone who came out for Non-Market Housing 101!

We need to be saying yes... and to all types of housing. It was great to hear from those building affordable housing in our city.

A timely message for National Housing Day.
⬇️
Public officials need to decide whether they prefer being punished for failing to solve the housing crisis because they've adopted milquetoast policies, or for doing things that upset NIMBYs but actually solve the problem. Electorally, there are no painless options, only solutions and nonsolutions.

@amoralorealis.bsky.social is one of the best communicators on the causes and effects of our broken housing system in the entire internet.
One reason I left Twitter was because of the nonstop (in-) fighting between the centre/centre left and the left in housing circles. In an effort to build a bridge early on here, I’m going to talk about my experience, both lived, and as an academic/activist. To kick things off: zoning is racist.

Great thread on today's budget adjustments hearing.
Today is an important public hearing day at #yyccc. It’s the day that council undertakes mid-cycle budget adjustments. Effectively, it’s an opportunity to realign the multi-year budget with emerging priorities & back up council decisions with $$. Here’s a quick 🧵on my thoughts👇

An anti-housing lawsuit here in Calgary kinda gets the point by missing the point: Public hearings are not democratic and representative processes.

The Housing Accelerator Fund has been in the news lately. While the program's core idea is fantastic, the federal government and CMHC have left it riddled with governance and transparency issues.

I'll illustrate using the federal agreement with Calgary as an example.
