At the end of the day, Madel said, “I have to look my daughters in the eye and tell them, ‘I believe I did what was right.’ And I am doing that today.”
Wow: A top GOP candidate for governor in Minnesota just announced that he is dropping out from the race. *And* that he is leaving the Republican Party.

He blamed the GOP's "stated retribution on the citizens of our state."

Chris Madel ends GOP bid for governor, says he can’t support federal ‘retribution’ against Minnesota
His exit comes as some other Republicans have started to distance themselves from the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in the state.

Philly is hiring a Director of Tax Policy and Planning. Show me your tax policy & I'll show you your values... I hope we get someone awesome.

My personal list: make small business taxes radically easier to navigate, more PLOTS, more low & mid income housing.

The ATProto community built a ton of great features and products over the past year. For our next trick, let's mature them into products and businesses.
(2/n) A feature solves one problem well — even delightfully well. But features get copied easily or absorbed into larger products. They have no distribution or adoption model. If your whole thing can become a pane in someone else's app, it's a feature.
January 16, 2026 at 4:32 PM
(1/n) A question to ask when building or evaluating software: Is this a feature, a product, or a business?

Mistaking one for another leads to heartache for both you and your users (I speak from experience).

What if the United States simply matched the average performance of our 31 peer nations in the OECD?

25 weeks of paid parental leave, life expectancy increases by 4.1 years, school shootings decrease 99%, electeds get 12 yrs younger, and much more.

A great story about software, lovingly and thoughtfully told. Yet somehow my first & strongest gut reaction was: GO BIRDS. (Read the first paragraph, you'll see.)
Been working on this one for a while — it's a little bit of history of a key foundation of internet technology, and a little bit of an explainer about how people _actually_ invent things. This is the amazing (true!) story of how Markdown took over the world. www.anildash.com/2026/01/09/h...

Great post highlighting how modern OSS licensing misses the mark on the time-tested principles of Elinor Ostrom's Governing the Commons — to our peril.
Anti-fascistic software is made possible by pro-labor licensing.

I've been trying to write this piece for years. Every time I get started I'm just overwhelmed with paralyzing visions of the FOSS commentariat accusing me of WrongThink.

But I'm tired and we urgently need to get our shit together.
