Glasgow southside. Golden age hip-hop, fitba and watching old episodes of the Wire.
Both released OTD 45 years ago! What a dilemma. Which single should the cash strapped two-tone pre-teen like me have been asking Santa for?

Civilise an 85er! Remember that time MTV banned the Wake Up video cause it had a black dude in whiteface.

Happy 59th birthday to Masta Ace. Still one of the freshest MCs out there. IMO Slaughtahouse is probably the most slept on LP in hip-hop.

35 years ago UK hip-hop was having a moment. Mere days after London Posse dropped their seminal LP, the Sindecut released Changing the Scenery. A head spinning mixture of hip-hop, soul and reggae, with an incredible production that shoulda catapulted them to stardom. Instead it's a lost UK classic.

Sound Affects was released on this day 45 years ago. Although Setting Sons is my personal fave, there's an argument that Sound Affects is the Jam's most accomplished LP. Brilliantly mixing emerging post-punk influences with 60s psychedelic pop, this was a band at the very height of its powers.

36 years ago tonite my flatmate from Washington DC dragged me along Glasgow's Mayfair to see the first Scottish gig of some band called Fugazi. My intro to straight-edge hardcore was unforgettable with an electric atmosphere and a blistering set from one of the greatest live bands ever.

Damn! that was fun. Murs was brilliant tonight. Not only a consummate MC, but a perpetual ball of energy. He exuded charisma and good vibes all night. I just may have found my new (old) favourite rapper. He hits Newcastle and Glasgow next - go see him if that's your ends. You can thank me later.
Woah. I just realised Murs is playing in London tonite at the Jazz Cafe and its only a few tube stops away from my hotel. Anyone seen him live - should I go?

Down in that their London for the day. Just went and saw Jennie Baptiste's small but perfectly formed photo exhibition on the UK hip-hop scheme at Somerset House. It's not only brilliant but free (well pay what you can).
