Sitting in the presence of my Quaker ancestors, I found a confused bird had something to tell me about protest and threat.

In a place where there’s been a whitethroat territory and a grasshopper warbler territory for the 14 years I’ve lived in the village, both are back this morning. My second territory for both this year.

Welcome home little ones.

Bird place-name of the day folks. Crows today, because I was back at one of the corvid places in my book this week in Devon too. My favourite crow place though is in Yorkshire. CRACKPOT. Old Norse kraka + Middle English pot. 'Rift in rock where crows abound'. #naturewriting #birdsandplace

That’s a cracking shot, Jake 👌

These galls on some local Sweet Chestnut had me confused as they were not in my big gall book. A bit of googling however led me to the Oriental Chestnut Gall Wasp. I don't know if the tiny wasp near the galls is the gall wasp itself, (continued in next post)

A brilliant Grist essay on the immense de-damming of the Klamath River in Oregon/California: a project that has resulted in the restoration of one of the largest salmon runs on the West Coast, and has also “set a profound new precedent for how the U.S. manages its water.”

How the Klamath Dams Came Down
Last year, tribes in Oregon and California pulled off the largest dam removal in U.S. history. This is their story.

Always striking how different the attitudes of the major landowner body is on access in Scotland since the Land Reform Act.

"As a large estate owner.. [it] feels like a moral contract that we need to provide the basic services required for people to take safe access"

The first of the worker bumblebees!

Tree, Early, Red-tailed and Heath Bumblebees all enjoying Dandelion!

The first workers are teeny! As the season progresses, workers increase in size with more food & helpers in the nest to feed them as larvae 💛

Simon Barnes’ hitting it for six (once again). 💚

A brilliantly accessible, open hearted, confidence-building (and life-affirming!) nature writer.

Sunset yesterday, at the gates of USAF Lakenheath.

Tea and good company in the face of weapons of mass destruction felt quietly, powerfully hopeful. And there blackbirds, singing their hearts out from inside the fences.

Some of our #wildflowers are so incredibly minuscule they are very easy to miss! This week’s challenge is to get your specs 🤓 on & see if you find any #tinyplants in bloom. Share your finds for #WildflowerHour this Sunday 8-9pm! Happy teeny flower spotting! 🧐🌸🌿

Eye-opening graph. The biggest wildfire incidents in the UK don't occur when it's hottest, in high summer: they take place in April - *when landowners set fire to their grouse moors & lose control of burns.*

Time to ban moorland burning.

Our #Bloomscrolling share this week is the irresistible cuckooflower 😍 Have you spotted any this spring?

They're an especially important food plant for the caterpillars of orange-tip and green-veined white butterflies 🦋
