For folks outside Chicago, Robert is one of our resident writers and flâneurs, who wanders, writes about, and honors Chicago history and lore. Also, he takes great pictures of local wildlife!

He's a fine fellow and great follow on BlueSky and elsewhere.

Okay, I know I’m very late to the party, but she’s the WICKED Witch of the West, not the COMPLEX AND MISUNDERSTOOD Witch of the West.

Big fucking ditches in the middle of the road
You pay a hundred dollars just for fillin’ in the hole
Listen to the general every goddamn word
How many ways can you polish up a turd
And left, right, left, left, right
Left, right
Hell broke luce
Hell broke luce

Borrowed this one from the library. I had my fill of the Beatles' main catalog decades ago, but hearing these raw takes of old rock songs from the early stages of their career reveals what was great about them. I'm a sucker for lo-fi garage rock too.

I interview @robertloerzel.bsky.social about his new book, The Uptown: Chicago's Endangered Movie Palace. The Uptown just turned 100, but it's been shuttered since 1981. From silent films to the Grateful Dead, the theater has seen it all.

I don't think this sort of nonsense is a "distraction" anymore. What we have are not-very-smart folks who achieved power and now realize they have to run things that aren't very sexy or macho.
Sean Duffy: "Dressing with respect -- whether it's a pair of jeans and a decent shirt, I would encourage people to maybe dress a little better which encourages us to maybe behave a little better. Let's try not to wear slippers and pajamas as we come to the airport."

Sorry to spoil a 100-year-old franchise, but Ozma of Oz basically features a trans character who's unaware of their true identity until the last chapter.
Well, there are a bunch of L. Frank Baum they could actually read...
‘Wicked: For Good’ is a box-office smash. Now, the process of figuring out another sequel is ‘underway’ at Universal, the studio’s chief marketing officer tells us.

Side note: whenever I watch movies from the 30s and 40s, the actors are often seen chain smoking and drinking like fish. Then when I look up everyone in the cast on Wikipedia... I discover most of them died of cancer or cirrhosis.
Sometimes I think about how for much of history everyone was medicated on booze, nicotine, cocaine, hasish, opiates, amphetamines, etc., and now we're all expected to just be out here raw-dogging life

I often say, I am not an optimist. I mean that in the sense that I don't ASSUME things will always turn out for the best. I do believe most humans work to fight entropy, and do their best to keep things running smoothly. Sometimes that doesn't happen, and sometimes people are awful, but...

A surprising dearth of stickers on gas pumps of Trump pointing at the price and saying, "I did that!" Not that the president dictates gas prices, but it's as if people were insincere with the Biden ones.
