What we did on our holidays. Neil and Chris have been travelling, clubbing and hanging around with a bloke from the Buggles. This is their postcard.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Greene on the Epstein files: "I can't conclusively say that's why the House isn't in session, but the House should be in session...there is a new Democrat that's been elected that deserves to be sworn in...if it's to avoid the discharge petition, why drag this out? It's going to have 218 signatures"

30 YEARS AGO TODAY: Sooty and co, of Sooty & Co, enter a local talent night MC'd by a depressive Jim Bowen. Back at the shop Scampi shows off his unexpected saxophone skills.

"Stardust" is the only Menswear record I feel is really good, albeit a little too generic Britpop. And the only one I bought at the time.

Yep. This.
Makes you wish they'd had the same amount of control over Dusty's album.

Nothing to see here, just Trump going for his second “yearly” checkup this year.

Anyone ready to admit that something is wrong with POTUS yet?

And may I say what a grand job you've done. Tons of info I didn't know.

Yeah, I'll give it seven then. Releasing "Don't Drop Bombs" as the second single was a bad move IMHO and killed momentum. 10 out of 10 for aesthetic reasons though - the Farrow packaging and design through the releases was SO Pet Shop Boys.

When "Results" is good, it's very good. "Losing My Mind", "Twist In My Sobriety", "Rent", "Tonight Is Forever", "Love Pains"... all the covers are brilliant. The original Tennant/Lowe compositions less so, with only "So Sorry I Said" shining, rescued by Liza's best stage spotlight solo vocal. 6/10

This album is majestic. I bought it solely based on the reputation of The Blue Nile's debut, even though I didn't own it. Worryingly adult to be lapping this up at age 20, but I think this helped set me up for my musical tastes to this day. You can't listen to The Stone Roses & Madonna all the time.

Continuing the Erasure trend of "decent first single" followed by "disappointing parent album". Nothing wrong with "Freedom" but it's not got any spark. But it positively shines like a beacon compared to the rest of "Loveboat", which sank. You see what I did there? This stuff writes itself.

The one nobody likes apart from me, it seemed. I thought "Head On" should have been a top 20 smash, so I was clearly out of step with their fanbase, never mind the general public.
