This morning our Head of Social Justice joined with colleagues from @povertyalliance.org and @independentage.bsky.social to discuss the impact a minimum income guarantee could make and the steps needed to deliver this as part of Challenge Poverty week. #ChallengePoverty #WeDemandBetter
The Minimum Income Guarantee can provide the sure foundation that we all need by ensuring a level of income that will allow all of us to live a dignified life. A roadmap has been created on the steps we need to take get there, now we need our politicians to commit to delivering these.

‘Be in no doubt that this is irrefutable testimony - it is a famine’
tomfletcherun.bsky.social
The Gaza Famine is the world’s famine. A preventable, predictable famine.

Enough. Ceasefire. Open all crossings, north and south. Let us get food in, unimpeded and at massive scale.

From social security systems to energy markets, structures are broken, corralling people down a path of poverty and injustice. Robbing people of their dignity and costing all of us. Change is needed.

It was my turn this morning on BBC Radio Scotland to bring ‘Thought for the Day’.

We are on the precipice of the greatest avoidable human tragedy of our lifetimes. All of our actions matter.
Two very distressing images. The first is a mother cradling her painfully thin baby - they are both starving. The second is you g girls with saucepans clamouring to get a place in the queue for food. The desperation in their faces is heartbreaking
mrsemmajacko.bsky.social
What an absolute shambles. The very worst kind of policy making. Is it less worse? Perhaps. But what a shamefully low bar.

In a just and compassionate society, we can do so much better than this. Social security is an investment in all of us. You and me.

📢 "It's incredibly hard to understand why the UK Government would be looking to reduce the incomes of those who are already facing the worst of poverty."

@mrsemmajacko.bsky.social was on Radio Scotland today talking about our calls for the UK Government to pause their plans for welfare reform.

NEW PROPOSAL
The rumoured new proposal seems to be that the 4+ rule won’t count if you are an existing claimant but will count for new claimants. This would be a disaster and it is crucial MPs vote against the green paper and follow through on the ‘recommended amendment’. Why? 🧵1/2
mrsemmajacko.bsky.social
The UK Govts welfare proposals will have a catastrophic impact on sick and disabled people if they go ahead. The impact for people in Scotland will be devastating.

These reforms are not the solutions we need. They must be halted #WeDemandBetter
We need Scottish MPs to vote against the unjust cuts to disability and incapacity benefits. Justice and compassion demand it
mrsemmajacko.bsky.social
So far 9 Scotland MPs are part of the 108 Labour MPs putting forward an amendment to halt the disability cuts.

For any MPs unclear of the impact this will have on people in Scotland, read this briefing and understand the harm it will cause

This powerful film was made by @savechildrenuk.bsky.social 10 years ago. This and worse is the lived reality of children in Gaza right now.

The scale of suffering children are forced to endure as a result of the war is abhorrent. We cannot stay silent.

With all eyes on the spending review, the UK Govt confirm they continue to move ahead with welfare reforms.

In complete contrast to what the Secretary of State says in this letter to ‘help people in the best possible way’ these will only cause debt, destitution and despair #TakingThePip

It’s blood donation week. A blood transfusion saved my life after a car accident. But because of that I can’t give blood.

Why not make plans to go give blood this week? Save someone’s life #GiveBlood

Amidst the by-election results noise, it was my turn this morning for BBC Radio Scotlands Thought for the Day. I chose to speak about abhorrent situation in Gaza as half a million people’s lives are at risk due to starvation.

The Pathways to Work Green Paper sets out plans to cut billions from health and disability benefits.

Instead of getting people into work, these cuts will push hundreds of thousands into poverty.

Our new report looks at the impact of cuts to PIP, UC health & scrapping the WCA (🧵)

The depth and scale of these reforms will be catastrophic. We must keep sounding the alarm and raise our voices.

Write to your MP, share your concerns. Urge them not to vote for this. Yes our social security needs reform - but not this.
