Defended PhD @ Brandeis University Dept. of Politics | Global Governance and Intl. Law Development in the Global Commons. I make maps sometimes, worried about the world all the time.
My guess is that this is the same sort of hyper-illegal action that's become normal, but this one in particular makes me sick to my stomach.
SCOOP: Sources tell me Donald Trump's name was added to the exterior of the US Institute of Peace building ahead of Thursday's peace agreement signing between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which will be held inside the building. Confirming if it's been officially renamed.

Why is House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries lying on Donald Trump's behalf?

The US-Mexico border was not insecure last year and secure this year. That is not true.
Jeffries: "The border is secure. That's a good thing. It happened on his watch. He wants to claim credit for it, of course he'll get credit for that. In terms of making sure that we actually deal with the issues that matter, including on immigration, there's a lot that's left to be desired."

If there is a legit conversation to be had about “overaccommodation” it’s about well meaning people lowering expectations for disabled kids and not giving them the opportunity or expectation to do cognitively demanding tasks. It’s not about giving kids an ufair advantage.

I'm starting to get concerned about how we are talking about the boat strikes. We are getting bipartisan consensus about the fact that the second strike on a boat, the one against shipwrecked sailors, was illegal, and there is somehow appetite to go after who is responsible. (1/6)

Grading International Relations exams today and came across a first: a student could not recall from class that the US engaged in military action against Al Qaeda because of the 9/11 attacks. We officially did not #neverforget

The story told here--one where anecdata suggests agency and autonomy have run amok and nameless activists are to blame--certainly rhymes with the NYT's disastrous panic about trans kids. Then you realize it's literally being written by the same author.

A Trump supporter started murdering his way through an assassination list of Democratic law makers FIVE MONTHS AGO. He murdered my colleague Melissa Hortman, and her husband Mark — and attempted to assassinate my dear friend John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. I was also on the hit list. WTF

Why did we take a mandatory unit on the Holocaust every year in Hebrew school if not to recognize this pattern
this defies parody. also helps explain why Sec Bessent bizarrely blamed immigrants when confronted with a question about high beef prices

This is disgusting. Swastikas, nooses, Confederate flags are symbols of hate. We cannot let the Trump administration normalize hate.

I mean, the first paragraph lays it all out.

The President, VP, and Agency officials, including the head of the Task Force to Combat Antisemitism, told us exactly what they intended to do & then did, which was use pretextual civil rights claims to impose ideological control on universities.

A huge district court victory for the University of California.

District courts find facts. This one found "overwhelming evidence" that the Trump administration has pervasively violated the First Amendment in its efforts to coerce and intimidate the University of California.

News story here—
‘Unlawful coercion’: Trump can’t withhold funds or demand payment from UC, federal judge rules
A federal judge ruled Donald Trump cannot demand that UCLA pay a $1.2 billion settlement that would have restricted academic freedoms.

From this minister's op-ed: "People wanting to experience God are more likely to meet the Divine trying to shut down the Broadview, Illinois, ICE facility than we ever were in church...God does not live in our houses of worship, but...with those who are bearing the brunt of cruelty in this moment."

US democracy needs more of the legal profession to stand up for rule of law, rather than writing apologetics for Supreme Court calvinball, or firms bending the knee to Trump's authoritarian exploitation.

Some recognize that the basis of their job is under assault. Hopefully this is a sign of more.
Worked in legal organizing for the last few years, and I never would have thought a movement of lawyers was possible until I had the displeasure of doing this job under Trump 2.0. Attacks on the rule of law are so blatant that even usually nonpartisan lawyers are done newrepublic.com/article/2026...
The Legal Professionals Planning to March Against Trump
Recent history has shown that attorneys and jurists can play a big role in bringing their nations back from the brink of autocracy. That day is coming for us as well.

January 18th, 2026. White smoke billows from a conference of independent book stores in Washington, D.C. A new speaker has been chosen. A visibly-bloody Elizabeth Warren emerges to claim her rightful throne.

every single week they're throwing this guy a special oval office love-in that appears to be the presidential equivalent of letting your dog scarf an entire big mac and fries before that last trip to the vet
Pirro: "Mr President, there is in this room a group of people who love you, who believe in you, and who are so proud to be in this Oval Office and to be part of this amazing day because you have changed the course of America."

I wrote about the "Appeasement Eight" Senate Democrats getting the party to fold to Trump in the government shutdown, and why it shows that pro-democracy Americans badly need a real opposition party, full of leaders who recognize the United States isn't a normal rule of law democracy anymore.
Democrats Have to Get Out of a Normal Democracy Mindset
By folding in the government shutdown in exchange for virtually nothing, eight Democratic senators aid Trump's authoritarian takeover rather than oppose it

Tea Party, circa 2010: “The Democrats are led by an African, Muslim socialist who wants to rebuild the welfare state!”

*Monkey paw curls*
I love that Mamdani is what the right claimed Obama was: A Muslim socialist born in Africa. The right practically manifested Mamdani into existence.
