This week I got to The Ledges in Vermont for the only time this year. But nice way to end the season! I missed most of the fall foliage, which came early due to a lack of rain that kept the reservoir low and the path dry. But while the distant hills appeared barren, I saw a bit more color closer up.

“Universally,” no, but there’s value even in just bringing up the issue through a survey. Once you start digging into what exactly people object to, I think there’s less disapproval than we think—if we can counter misperceptions. And allowing any “public” nudity at all doesn’t mean no restrictions.

Good article, with a personal touch.

When open and mutual nudity are only in sexual or abusive contexts, too many people associate nudity in itself with these things. But lack of simple exposure to nudity harms in different ways. When casual nudity exists outside these contexts, all harms lessen.

Is any parkland an exception? It’s really too bad this went from technically allowing someone to walk naked in the center of town to virtually no nudity at all within city limits. Tbh I wish people hadn’t overstepped. The Berlin, Germany model of some nudity in public parks could’ve worked instead 😕

Thank you for this perspective. I feel like: Someone is embracing nudity; I embrace nudism; why do I cut this person off because of the particular way they embrace it? Plus it’s their own body. If someone else doesn’t like it, it seems counter to body acceptance to say “We don’t want to see that.”

It’s hard for me to fathom objecting to someone being nude in their own garden (also living in the highly developed northeast US, it’s also hard to relate to even having a private garden!) But we should build on where majorities do think nudity is acceptable.

One of the most helpful writings I’ve ever read on naturism/nudism/whatever you want to call it, and I’m sure I’ll revisit it. Divide #2 is particularly insightful; the bar should be very high before excluding anybody. (Tbh, my favorite crowd is at a site where many people just happen to go naked.)

As I climbed up, it was as if I could feel our summer start to wane here in North America. But if it were possible to look far enough, I’d also see the Southern Hemisphere spring on the horizon.

Congratulations on arriving at this openness so early! I’m a couple of decades older and my recent breakthrough was finding out my parents have seen a naked video and pics of me. I see it as positive. Given how many have seen my whole body, it started to feel strange still hiding it from my parents.

And unexpected! Visits with relatives have not usually been clothes-free, even though I had a history with this uncle on youthful outdoors trips long ago. He can’t take those trips anymore, but now it seems I can visit him at home and be nude there and in beautiful areas nearby to kayak to together☺️
