What fun would it be if I was just a simple girl next door?

Hey folks, I'm a narrative designer at CCP Games and have a PhD in Computational Media and an MFA in Digital Arts and New Media from UC Santa Cruz
My indie work includes interactive fiction, visual novels, plays, and tabletop games
A lot of my work deals with gender and queerness!

I've never had an issue with "gifted kid burnout," but man oh MAN, "gifted kid aversion to not being immediately good at something right away" has been a lifelong struggle.
I cling to my incremental gains in coding/gamedev and Japanese like a fucking life raft.

This is random but whenever I see people going on snidely about how the majority of people are stupid or whatever, it feels like I'm witnessing dunning-kruger in real time. In this specific case it was scoffing over scam emails being too obvious so it was a lot of "hah, *I* would never fall for it!"

Me: I'm too tired and too old. I don't want to have to write lyrics to the melody of this song we're fan translating.
Wife: but it's fun ;.;

Stories don't need to have a point to exist, but what makes them rewarding is their ability to stick with us. A process that shortcuts an understanding of that ability, whether it's beautiful prose, playful language, subtleties of a character, or w/e is just shortchanging everyone to make a buck.

If you're reading MTL you might have an idea of what the work is but you're not actually engaging with the work itself. AI is simply finding a statistical correlation between words. It inherently can't 'understand' nuance, context within the rest of the work, or idiosyncratic turns of phrase.
As machine translation tools under the banner of AI become increasingly accessible and easy to use, the light novel landscape is at a crossroads. Do light novel publishers compromise their product for more speed, and if so, by how much?

The trick of stilted loc is that the *writer* of the thing you're reading did not write in a stilted fashion. They gave it their best effort to write something good, that would resonate, that would make you feel, make you think. It's culture.
Stilted loc robs all of that from you.

i am so, so tired of the concept of a "perfectely serviceable" localization. we, as a society, should stop settling for "well, it's understandable so it's good enough" when the bar could be so, so much higher.
it's hard, HARD work and i would never discredit that, because i know how tough it is

I don't have much attachment to Twitter at all. But, Japan basically didn't get the memo about Twitter. Assault Lily definitely did not. All information about it--announcements of plays, of actors, etc, all on Twitter. Actress selfies, their impressions of the shows, etc, all on Twitter.
