Surprisingly decent morning on Lytchett patch in continuing unhelpful weather. 5 Goosander were first of the year. Bar Wit, Green Woodpecker and Bullfinch all notable. CR head starter Curlew and Wigeon up to 530 (in the 90's they were almost a rarity here!) @dorsetbirdclub.bsky.social #Dorsetbirds

I don't think this Marsh Harrier at Lytchett Fields RSPB spotted me, so it came a bit closer to the viewpoint than usual. The light helped too!

Good news on Dorset Cirl Buntings continues to arrive. Early data from the breeding season confirms they are continuing to re-establish a population in the county. Please submit any outstanding records now. 🙏 In winter our focus switches to feeding flocks - please send us all sightings. 🙏
We will once again be running the winter feeding station at RSPB Lytchett Fields. Hope to open it around Nov 1st. This is volunteer run and funded. If you would like to support us with a donation please see or contact @ianballam.bsky.social or myself 🙏
That bird was a tick for me. 🙏
23rd October, often magical. 👍😁 ps. What's happened to the blog updates?

It all kicked off yesterday afternoon on North Ron with a Radde’s Warbler trapped at the obs! And then a Northern Bullfinch caught at HH

I didn’t think it could get any better until Alison and I found this Black-throated Thrush in a net during the roost catch!

Thrilled to have the first Cirl Bunting colour ringed on Portland as part of a Dorset wide project to understand more about the species spread across the county. Please keep a look out and report any sightings. And huge thanks to all the ringers involved 💚.

I religiously enter eBird data. I am a scientist by profession and eBird makes me feel I am adding to the data available to today’s scientists to progress our knowledge. It has helped me engage with my birding in many ways that were not possible during my previous birding period in the 90s.

As a county bird recorder I can honestly say that the best and easiest way for you to make your birding count, is to upload them to either eBird or BirdTrack. Doing so contributes directly to #ornithology and bird #conservation at both local and national levels.

The remarkable rise of eBird – the world’s biggest citizen science project
In 2002, an online database was set up allowing birdwatchers to record their species observations. It is now a vast resource, shaping scientific research.
