My latest piece, for the History News Network - why sending federal troops into US cities is a 2nd Amendment Issue.

I've written a bunch of op-eds and the like over the years. This is my best one yet.

Deploying Federal Troops to U.S. Cities Is a Second Amendment Issue
But not because the founders wanted to see more guns in the hands of Americans.

“The potential that a power-hungry leader could set the military against the very population it was meant to protect would always loom. The Second Amendment is part of the Bill of Rights because the men who wrote it wanted to prevent that from happening.” Great work by @ncshusterman.bsky.social

I don't know how much those nets were to blame. I tend to think their role has been a bit overestimated. Still, seeing them freaks me out, and I'm sure that's true for many people - especially those who live behind them. And that matters. Especially right now.

Yes, I know. Political stakes, shouldn't make fun of people's names, all that. I just. But each time I read "Lecornu" the image, poof! there it is in my mind.

ICAC alleges that, in order to replace mesh netting damaged by typhoons, "someone" purchased substandard mesh netting from a local supplier at the price of $54/roll in july. And used up-to-spec mesh netting only at the bottom of the scaffoldings as a cover

Seven samples of the scaffold netting from Wang Fuk Court did not meet fire retardant standards, according to HK Chief Secretary Eric Chan. The ICAC has also found that compliant netting was mixed in with non-compliant netting in order to evade patrols.

It just seems to me - non-expert, yes - that if the bamboo scaffolding was the problem, more of it would have burned.

International media, you can do better than this.

"Bamboo" is maybe exotic and a compelling hook but it is too easy. The real story here is the growing culture of corruption, including a lack of accountability and oversight, that enabled a chain of human errors that led to this disaster.

"Flame-retardant nets – taking nets of the size seen in the fire as an example, 18×2 metres – costs about HK$75 to $90 per piece.

The same size but without the fireproof performance will cost $40 to $50 per piece, so it provides an incentive for some to take risks."

Horrifying.
And... I don't remember anything even remotely like this happening here during the decade we've been here.
There are fires in the hills, and in specific apartments. But this kind of fully-engulfed buildings? I didn't think that would happen.
