We saw a similar situation in Brazil. When X/Twitter was fined & subsequently suspended, it was not an act of censorship; rather, the Supreme Court was enforcing a law passed in 2014- a widely known and long-standing piece of legislation that platforms have been required to follow for over a decade.
Don't let anyone tell you that the Commission's DSA enforcement against X is about speech or censorship.

That would, indeed, be interesting. But this is just the EU enforcing some normal, boring laws that would get bipartisan support in the U.S. (I bet similar bills *have* had that support.) 1/

4. Civil society and community fact-checkers did the heavy lifting.

Much of the evidence came from communities countering disinformation, who reported, documented, and alerted the authorities. Any fines collected should be channelled back into supporting this chronically underfunded field.

3. Malicious semi-compliance must have consequences.

Rogue behaviour, foot-dragging, or “checkbox” compliance designed to evade the spirit of the law should trigger stronger sanctions, including higher fines.
An anti-compliance shield is needed.

2. The goal of the DSA isn’t to collect fines.

But voluntary measures have shown their limit.
Its purpose is to change company behaviour and toxic business models. What matters now is whether X adapts its systems to comply with the rules Europeans have sovereignly decided.

1. This is only the beginning.

X will certainly appeal. The Commission must stay firm in enforcement — and civil society must also keep up the pressure. Building case law takes time, and both regulators and watchdogs need to hold the line.

Regarding the X fine announced today, a few points are worth keeping in mind, before unfolding in deep what’s there.

The European political ads regulation is definitely a breakthrough to improve readers awareness.

The fact that platforms like Meta or Google refuses to comply is revealing their despite against any empowerment of their users.

Is it possible that whole “free speech” and “ending censorship” thing was all just a setup by election deniers and useful idiots to work platform referees into serving their objectives? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 Maybe there was no “censorship industrial complex” and these ppl never gave a shit ab free speech. 🙊
