Rural Arkansas is worth fighting for. If I look like I'm listening, I'm probably daydreaming about light quality. I write about books and I prefer to hang out with dogs and chickens.

Yes! What if we treated extremely normal human variation as something other than a "disorder"???

Angry judges’ writings are my favorite genre of literature these days.
hi, judge expert here, judges only do this when they're in extreme distress!

Oh this nails how I feel, actually. Check on a survivor today, friends. It’s been a rough week for us.

The book club scam has taken an exciting new leap forward. I got one today from a "curated literary platform and newsletter" that, unusually, offered a link to its website. I'm in edits, so obviously I took the opportunity to procrastinate. /1

I've said this before but I truly believe we could revitalize YA and kidlit overnight by switching to MMPB and paperback first. Kids want paperbacks! It is by far the biggest request I get from teen readers.
hello this is the official petition to bring back mass market paperbacks!! mmpbs are good actually and everyone should do them!! i think esp romantasy readers would really love that shit! and you can still spray those edges!!! bring back mass market paperbacks thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When the kid says “I’m scared too” 😭
This teenager saved his neighbor's dog from drowning in a freezing pond. This is Bernard. His family contacted emergency services right away, but high school senior Hugh Pinneo got to Bernard first. Hugh said he's "just glad I acted that day and saved the dog's life." We are too. 12/10 for all

A GLASS FACE! Me too
Heaven help me if I ever meet someone in person who claims to be an AI author. I have a glass face. I cannot pretend. I will do my trademark cackle and then just snicker uncontrollably for a while. Do you let the plagiarism robot kiss your lover? Look at sunsets for you? Why are you even alive?

Real quick, *do* y’all know how to pronounce Martinez in Louisiana
NEWS: Democrat Chasity Martinez has won the Louisiana HD-60 special election, defeating Republican Brad Daigle and holding the seat.

Martinez won 63%–37%. Trump carried the district by 13 points in 2024.

Another major Democratic overperformance.

Sometimes I feel like maybe I’ve become too much of a conspiracy theorist, but like, so many of them have turned out to be true since my childhood so… what’s conspiracy theory and what’s pattern recognition and why is that line harder to find than it used to be

Walmart is officially a trillion-dollar company.

Today the retail giant joined the ranks of Meta, Tesla, Amazon and more to pass a $1 trillion market cap.

Meanwhile, starting pay at Walmart is as low as $14/hour, and thousands of its workers have to rely on SNAP and Medicaid.

It's hard to overstate how ell-organized the portland march that got gassed was... organizers made the crowd promise to be peaceful, said the march would slow in front of the ICE building but not stop, that we would stick to one chant (ICE Out). They did absolutely everything right and got gassed.

“Children were in the crowd screaming.”
Just experienced the most intense tear gassing of my life by federal officers outside the ICE facility in Portland where marchers gathered. There was no fast exit as they indiscriminately threw loads of gas and flash bangs. Children were in the crowd screaming. @oregoncapitalchronicle.com

Nobody does it like Shusterman.
"My greatest wish for humanity is not for peace or comfort or joy. It is that we all still die a little inside every time we witness the death of another. For only the pain of empathy will keep us human. There's no version of God that can help us if we ever lose that."

This is so many of my patrons.
if you want to do a fun experiment, turn off your phone + computer for a week. just one week. not as a digital vacation, not as a retreat into the woods. you have to go to work, plan hangouts, pay rent, deal with a leak in your ceiling, get a menu, find a bus line, do laundry, check weather...etc
People really don’t understand how ubiquitous the expectation that everyone has a smartphone has become
