I found this little Essay on "Diegetic" versus "Non-Diegetic" Kink in Fiction to be very Insightful and helpful to those lacking a Framework for conceptualizing the Difference between Stories in which Characters do/don't know that they are performing Kink Scenes:

"The Scene" is the fantasy within a CNC framework.
Some fictional works tell a story depicting two (or more) characters following the process of doing CNC kink, just as they would in real life: Consent discussion, Kink negotiation, “The Scene", and Aftercare.
