I'm Nate!

I'm not really "making" any "content" these days, but I used to write about game music for various sites, and for ~7 years I had a podcast called GO BACK AND PLAY, in which some friends & I took a whirlwind tour through the history of videogames!

Why didn’t we get like six more of these games

(I mean, I know it was part of a collection of small games. Like… we should have more 5-hour virtual tabletop dungeon crawls with good writing)
#31 - Crimson Shroud

I would play a dozen of these — a bite-sized RPG dungeon crawl from the folks behind FFT and Vagrant Story that REALLY commits to conveying the flavor of a tabletop adventure. And just like Vagrant Story, I forgive it for its handful of unfriendly design choices.

Rewatching The X-Files, probably my favorite show of all time despite the cruft of its later seasons, and I gotta admit that its drama about clandestine organizations manipulating the world from the shadows hits different in an era where nakedly corrupt buffoons trash everything with public bumbling

Very convenient of our kitchen fridge to die on Black Friday. Perhaps… suspiciously convenient

You know what, Crimson Shroud for the Nintendo 3DS? I like your style, but I might have to tap out after fighting the exact same group of skeletons 15 times in a row in the hope one of them drops a rare-but-plot-critical item

Fellowship Extended: Good additional material but causes the pace to drag
Two Towers Extended: Lots of good additional material, definitively better than theatrical
Return of the King Extended: overstuffed, unnecessary skullvalanche
It's time for the annual rewatch of Lord of the Rings leading up to Christmas, and with just a couple exceptions, I can confidently say theatrical cut is far and away the superior version.

Once again I confess to missing the old Steam sale structure where you had to check in every six hours to see the hottest Dealz, because I am sick in the head

Power outage affecting my entire neighborhood is no doubt throwing quite a wrench into some local Thanksgiving plans

realizing belatedly that Kris has used the 🌳 emoji here following "sand cruiser" because the sand cruiser in question is called the Yggdrasil
If your JRPG 🎮 doesn't have a dolphin 🐬 as your sand cruiser's 🌳 sonar operator 🎧 I don't want to hear about it 😤

One of the difficult things about being married, as a man, is that your wife seems to grow more beautiful and radiant with each year that passes while you yourself rapidly begin to look like this

Think I might be the only person alive who is watching Ken Burns’ American Revolution and thinking “…I should replay Assassin’s Creed III.”

Some mornings one of your kids has a meltdown about a really frivolous thing and it takes every ounce of your patience and restraint to help guide them through it and calm them down without snapping or blowing your stack and you do it! Success!

And then you have to start your day at 0% patience.

I've been noodling around with Aquanaut's Holiday, which was the first game I ever owned for the original PlayStation and which I absolutely did not appreciate as an eleven-year-old

7YO, having found some Phoenix Wright manga on our family bookshelves, is now incredibly invested in the first Ace Attorney game.

I watched her, frustrated by the underhanded machinations of Miles Edgeworth, narrow her eyes at her 3DS and growl “I want to stain your ruffles.”

That Digiphile bundle with all the immersive sims has a bunch of stuff I'm not interested in, but I'm almost tempted by it just for the System Shock 2 remaster at $20.

Went to a board game cafe with the kids to celebrate making it through the week and unlocked a long-dormant childhood memory by playing Home Alone: The Board Game. (Photo not mine.)

Gavin Newsom, famous for producing the controversial “Twisted Metal” vehicular combat tournament
This is a real image the U.S. Department of Homeland Security just posted to Twitter in response to the governor of California.

Real weird shit, as they say
