Establishing the run against authoritarian rule, as @edsbs.bsky.social says, requires the little things, the acts of resistance and kindness and community that eventually add up to something much larger and transformative.

I wrote about it for BadFaithTimes.com.

I have long said that if I am ever killed in a random act of violence, so help me god I will bring my atheist ass back from the dead and haunt you permanently if you ever think of trying to use my death to crack down on the demographic group of the perpetrator.
Naming a proposed law after a dead person, particularly a child, is fundamentally a demand that everyone be credulous, unquestioning, and obedient.
It may be even simpler than that: No politician dares vote against terrible policy with untold downstream consequences for many—for the simple fact that it's named after a victim of an unspeakable/inexcusable act of violence.

God help us all if that's all it takes to create criminal legal policy.

Sadly, this is very true. It’s actually one of the reasons that local law-enforcement doesn’t always have a good relationship with ICE, as the agency has been known to deport people in the middle of criminal proceedings. That annoys local prosecutors.
To add to this a bit: in my experience as a criminal defense attorney, a conviction isn't necessarily required. I've frequently had situations where I get appointed to represent an indigent undocumented defendant, and they're picked up by ICE and deported at the inception of the case.
ICE already prioritizes people with criminal convictions so let’s be clear, if they want to ever get the high numbers they’ve been bragging about they’ll have to expand much more broadly to people without criminal convictions.

Reading between the lines, the article suggests even the Trump people do think that they have to follow some kind of legal procedures. They’re clearly talking about needing new regulations, executive orders, and policies — not law-free round ups.

They are tacitly admitting to limitations, too.
