You have the RIGHT to request reasonable accommodations! If you have special needs due to a disability or other condition, be sure to advocate for yourself with DSS and request an accommodation form if you need assistance with accessing services, or a placement that will suit your needs.

Our legal system is super complex - without representation, it's incredibly difficult for the average person to navigate and almost impossible to achieve equitable justice. LSC levels the playing field.

Big news for the disability community: In January, ABLE account eligibility expands! The age of disability onset will increase to 46, allowing more people who acquire disabilities later in life to save for qualified expenses and build greater financial independence.

Starting next year, people who became disabled by age 46 will be eligible for ABLE accounts. The accounts have been slow to catch on, partly because the current age limit is 26.

While the social services law requires that, "as far as possible families shall be kept together," sometimes there are multiple priorities being considered during emergency housing and placement situations.

Remember, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT not to be separated!

Betty's Story in blue speech bubble with neighborhood houses on the bottom of the image. “Betty” had been living in a home owned by her cousin “Karen.” When Karen considered gifting her the home, the family was concerned about the impact that might have on Betty’s SSI, so they made an arrangement to give the home to another relative, with the stipulation that Betty be allowed to remain in the house and take responsibility for taxes and utilities. This arrangement worked well for several years, until one day, Betty was served with a 90 notice to leave the home. The fantastic legal minds at NLS Lockport argued that Betty was NOT, in fact, a tenant, and therefore could not be evicted by a notice like this. The judge agreed and Betty is now free to remain in her home while we prepare for the next steps...

Crystal won a $7,500 settlement in her discrimination case and plans to use it to pay for college. Dawn’s eviction was stayed for six weeks, allowing her to secure alternate permanent housing. Thomas was awarded over $40,000 in back benefits after appeal, allowing him to remain at the assisted living facility where he’d been thriving.
