👋 hey y'all!

I'm Noah and spend my days at @theathletic.bsky.social working with our team to make it easier to be a fan of your favorite teams & sports.

I tend to ramble about how people develop media habits, why they choose to visit certain websites / apps, and weirdly push notifications.

Wait… when did gmail get rid of the priority inbox?!?

Is this a move to just force me to use Gemini to read my email because all the filters and training are now kaput?

Back to my bullsh*t

While I quibble with the copy and frequency behind some of these noties…

… ESPN’s “ditch Twitter and follow our news breakers in the app” works as advertised and is a good to great feature. I wish they kept iterating weekly to make it a cornerstone of their app.

Jason Kilar made a lot of ambitious bets running WarnerMedia… but at least the team tried to build their own distribution infrastructure.

Selling to Netflix means the only non-tech show in town is Comcast… the future is Google, Netflix, and Amazon with a dash of Apple.

Yahoo’s realtime AI generated game recaps follow YouTube TV or Amazon’s “catch me up on the big plays” features

These are cool prototypes that are narrowly designed to solve the problem of - I turned the game on with 10m left.

Subscribe to print magazines!

If you live in a place where it still exists, get a print newspaper (at least on the weekends).

Leave your phone in another room and it’s wild how much better you feel 30m later.
I feel like the physical media narrative is lost. So many who champion analog in regards to movies, that advocate for Blu-ray and 4K discs over streaming of those films, have seemingly zero issue with using services like Spotify while not also buying records. Physical media is all of it.

“Most people don’t dream of spending their baby’s first holiday season in the hospital, and you can make that difficult experience easier for them to bear by donating to Project NICU,” Jessica Grose writes in her giving guide.

I should just blog this idea out one day...

Now that nearly every newsletter sends an annual gift guide (I'm all here for it), consider this my annual proclamation that we need more digital shelving!

Diary apps (Letterboxd, Goodreads, etc) and boards (Pinterest) kinda offer this... but not quite!

tbh at this rate all of the established players are just making it too easy for new publications like @thebulwark.com to grow exponentially because the caliber of available reporting talent is off the charts

Having kids rules.

Our individualistic / sink or swim culture does not rule.

And it’s wild thinking about how much harder it was for a lot of Gen X and Boomer parents.

As one of the handful of Tampa Bay fans on this app, fire them cannons!

(This is really a dual appreciation post of both Egbuka’s absurd start to the season and JJ consistently posting to this app - he remains one of the best)
Emeka Egbuka through his first five games in the NFL:
Target share per game: 23%
PPR Points Per Game: 20.5
Receiving yards per game: 89.0
Touchdowns per game: 1.0

$150 million for a media business with sub 200k paying subscribers and a circulation business of sub 2m readers is 100% a “you gonna get fired in 18 months” type of move for anyone else…

(Yes I know the why here but also it’s worth sitting with the absurd economics of this deal)

Ultimately I probably believe that this format of short form microblogging layered on top of massive networks is probably breaking our brains and too open to manipulation.

And yes I am terminally addicted and rely on these types of feeds to soothe, entertain, and inform me!

The core idea of "vibe coding" is to quickly build software that is low quality but kinda usable. It's built in a way where you have no idea how it works. It's a fast. It's kinda usable. It's ultimately crap.

Cue Microsoft's "vibe working" vision! www.theverge.com/news/787076/...
