Honestly I can't believe it's been 15 years since Rebecca's post on a certain predatory physicist and it's aaaaall coming back up.

A+. Well done. Laugh til you cry through this one.
Mainstream news covered the Jeffrey Epstein emails related to ppl like Trump. Today, I want to take a look at Epstein's correspondence with prominent atheist and physicist Lawrence Krauss, who asked the pedophile's advice on responding to accusations of sexual assault skepchick.org/2025/11/so-i...

I appreciate the timing of this after a particularly rough day in academia... especially since similar advice from Phil when I was a wee bebe grad student was so instrumental to the trajectory my career eventually took!
Life can be extremely difficult to navigate. I'm lucky enough to have found my way. Maybe I can help you figure out how to find yours.

Looks like the article has been updated to suggest maybe they misread the policy.

I see people complaining that this also disabled their spam filters, though I still see new messages showing up in spam so it's still working fine for me after disabling things.

Machine learning (umbrella term, I know) is a useful, sometimes transformative tool in the hands of trained researchers who understand how to deploy it and critically assess the results.

A chatbot is not useful in the same ways (though underlying technologies may be, in other contexts).

Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

Fascinating thread!

But also...

I see the picture of the family on that site and think "wow! Old timey photo!" and I keep reading and it's 1992 a year when I was definitely alive 😭
OK, so. Below a certain size, the atmosphere takes care of the problem--objects below 10 meters in size, say, are going to give a great showy fireball but not do any damage on the ground unless you're really personally unlucky, like the teenager who owned this car.

Google has started automatically opting you in to let it read your stuff to train AI. You need to turn this off in SEVERAL places in your settings (not just for Gmail), if you want to maintain privacy and confidentiality.

Your Signal chats are only as safe as the people you include...

Besides that, rather disturbing read. The report characterizes a courtwatch group as “anarchist violent extremists”.
So a few things about this from friends who were on this chat: This chat was "lightly vetted" so they're making a big deal out of very little. It was not infiltrated -- so your vetted chats on signal remain safe. But caution is king.

Giving summer weekend tours at the VLA was a highlight of my development as a science communicator ❤️
The NSF Very Large Array is open daily for visitors to explore - but did you know that we also offer free guided tours on Saturdays and Sundays?

Tour included with regular Visitor Center admission on weekends. No separate ticket needed.
