In the last 5+ years, we should’ve instituted clean indoor air beginning in schools & hospitals, ensured doctors & healthcare workers wear good masks, & properly informed the public abt airborne transmission & the true dangers of COVID. Instead the gov’t opted for basically pretending it all away.

NO ONE will help you if you dont ask.

No company or landlord will ease up if you dont make a big public fuss.

Politeness & shame are tools those with social power use to get away with abuse, neglect & killing folks.

we’re getting so close to having a vaccine that will actually finally end the pandemic, as long as enough people are able to receive it.

the protection offered by the current covid boosters wanes pretty quickly, too.

someday we will have a vaccine that works more like the measles vaccine—get it once and it lasts decades.

but we’re not quite there yet.

as always i need to make the disclaimer that even though the current vaccines aren’t perfect, they are a crucial *layer* of protection that we should all be defending ourselves with, in addition to preventing infection altogether via masking and ventilation/air purification.

(ps: i am far from an anti-vaxxer. i just hit two weeks post-my most recent covid booster, and have personally experienced what it’s like to get something i wasn’t vaccinated for—ramsay-hunt syndrome, due to reactivation of the chickenpox virus. i love vaccines! i also love dealing with reality.)

and because half of covid cases are asymptomatic, you might not even know you’re sick.

covid isn’t going anywhere until we stop letting it mutate and spread.

the current vaccines alone can’t do that. they primarily help reduce the severity of the initial infection.

Your bad cold is likely COVID. Your horrible allergies right now are likely COVID. We're in a massive COVID wave. If you test the first day of symptoms on a rapid test it is likely going to give you a false negative - you need to test again in 48 hours and again 48 hours after that on a rapid test.

a relevant example from my own life is that my BFF has been acutely ill for months this year due to chronic illness.

now he gets to find out if he’s just going home from the hospital with just stitches, or if he’s also incubating a disease that will harm him and his also chronically ill family.

i don’t know yet if he’s going to be able to get medicaid to retroactively cover this hospitalization, because we haven’t been talking about stressful stuff. but… i am really hoping so…🤞🏻

BFF update! his surgery went well.

there was so much gallbladder disease going on that it was probably a big contributor to how sick he was from what we thought was just MCAS for months earlier this year.

really sucks that the hospital here missed that!

my BFF, formerly my platonic partner and spouse of a number of years, who went through an acute MCAS flare from may-august and then moved home, i’m finding out after taking some space, is still not doing well.

reducing hospitalizations and deaths is great! a 30% reduction in long covid is great! but until the vaccines and boosters stop transmission, they are not enough protection on their own for us to actually safely relax all our other layers of prevention 😭

Having gotten my vax today, let me reiterate that it DOES NOT prevent catching or spreading covid on its own.

The vax is one piece of Swiss cheese.

Risk assessment isn’t a “one and done”.

Mitigation works best in layers.

Vax AND mask AND stay the fuck home when sick.

yeah lol i myself had ramsay-hunt syndrome (basically, facial shingles) 12 years ago, in my 20s, and it derailed my life for months… whereas i had chickenpox way back when i was still in the single digits.
