“Any university leader who signs on to this compact would betray everything good and solid about the university and would do deep and permanent harm to the United States and the world,” writes @sivav.bsky.social in this brilliantly belittling essay. newrepublic.com/article/2013...

Grants are awarded to faculty, not university administrators. The "compact" with universities that Trump is offering would completely dismantle the peer review process by awarding funding based on administrative policies rather than the merits of the research. Just say no.

This is reminding me of one of the staged suicides in the movie Heathers where they just underlined the word "Eskimo"

H1-B visas are nearly all granted to workers who already have graduate degrees, so it doesn't explain the lack of entry level jobs in tech fields. You can blame misguided reliance on AI and the foundering economy for that.

Howard Lutnick on new H1B visa fees: "If you're going to train somebody, you're going to train one of the recent graduates from one of the great universities across our land." How does that work when you're simultaneously defunding research and training programs at all American universities?

The logic of sabotaging the ability to hire trained researchers from abroad while simultaneously sabotaging the ability of US universities to train American researchers is truly baffling.

I think we are dangerously underestimating how many jobs we will lose to AI and how deep the spiritual cost will be.

The industry tells us strong restrictions on AI will hurt us and help China. I wrote this to explain how they pulling one over on us.

This is absolutely insane. As faculty face funding cuts, the University of Michigan is spending millions to hire incompetent undercover investigators to surveil student activists.

We dealt with this in Louisiana and ended up with a nice compromise policy that limits retail quantities to 5mg THC per unit. Easy enough.

The next move, according to Project 2025, will be to shift all NIH research funding to state block grants. Then the corporate takeover will be complete.
