I've decided I'm going to do 2023 as well, which means these are going to be out of order but whatever.
My Best Posts of 2024 ('cause why not)
Those Legend of Zelda live-action stills and the reactions to them got me thinking a lot about video game adaptations and here are some of those thoughts in some sort of order or possibly no particular order:

A legitimate question(s) I have for genAI art enjoyers (who presumably will not see this but hey) is, how do you talk about the art? Like, when you’re talking about an AI image you like, how do you express your appreciation of it? What aspects of the image do you highlight?

@timclare.bsky.social listening to the first episode of But Why Vikings? and a supplementary note I’d add to the conversation about introducing people to RPGs is you could even start by playing games that lend themselves to role-playing but are not strictly speaking RPGs.

- comedies that make you cry
- heist movies where they don’t lie to you about the twist (any movie with a plan and a twist is a heist movie)
- animated movies so beautiful that they pierce your soul
- actors making choices
- we’re going to spend the next three hours talking about this
What are your top 5 movie genres? Mine are:

Existential Soviet Cinema
French hipsters play at acting and movies
Screwball cynicism meets Capraesque heart
British flamboyance and theatrics that are resolutely antithetical to the British moral majority
Arnie being Arnie
- Films from 1932 in which three chorus girl gold diggers who share a flat try to survive the Depression
- Craggy former gunslinger bleakly confronts his life’s work
- Miscarriage of justice documentary
- Half-arsed ‘80s buddy comedy
- Holly Hunter whispering

Maybe it’s just because I haven’t played anything attempting photorealistic graphics in a while, but going back to look at Horizon Forbidden West footage I’m actually kind of gobsmacked. As much as I slightly hate the game I think maybe I didn’t give it enough credit for how good it looks.

Got back to my re-read(/actually finishing this time) of Ultrasylvania after a couple months away and immediately came across another stunner of a panel:

“Ew, you only know that person from their easily accessible contemporary commercial work and not their older/more obscure/more niche stuff that you would only seek out if you already knew about them
To me the thing about some kid knowing who Wallace Shawn is from Young Sheldon is

Hey, young people know who Wallace Shawn is, that's great.

I'd forgotten about this poem for like three years and then dug it out for an open mic last night and it went over pretty well so I guess it's actually not bad: certainofeventualfailure.com/2025/11/13/t...

There are lots of games that should be on here that aren’t (Citizen Sleeper (despite me voting for it 3 times), Transistor, Dragon Age II) and yet somehow there was room for 9 Mario Karts and a plethora of Pokémons, but it gives me hope for humanity that Far Cry 3 is nowhere to be found.
Almost a year ago, I started this crazy project. And now, it's finally time to vote on "The Greatest Game of All Time!"

501 entries across all of gaming. Choose your Top 10 and let's see what ends up as the greatest! Voting will remain open until the end of 11/23!

Continuing my college essay retrospective series, which is increasingly difficult to justify as I run out of things to say to satisfy the premise that I'm doing this as a teaching tool but I'm over halfway done so I'm gonna keep going: certainofeventualfailure.com/2025/11/10/o...
Office Hours #6: Let’s Exchange the Experience (Would’ve Also Been a Fun Title for This Paper But I Hadn’t Heard “Runnin’ Up That Hill” Yet)
I am, of course, completely avoiding the subject of whether or not words have meaning.

I did end up leaving work early just to be safe but I’m really glad I went in because two of my coworkers who were laid off a few months ago are back and that was a huge mood booster.

Back started hurting out of nowhere but feels better now that I’m dressed with my belt as tight as possible, so now I feel like the girl in the story with the right around her neck, like what’s gonna happen when I take my belt off is my torso just going to fall off.

So I’ve seen some discussion of monotropism and felt like I vibed with ~60% of it, but I took the test and, well, I just don’t know how to weigh this, and my 164 RAADS-R score, against the autistic psychologist who specialized in treating people with autism who said I’m definitely not autistic.

Famously you can see Will Smith mouthing other people’s lines in early Fresh Prince episodes, but what’s really weird is you can also see Alex Horne doing that (specifically with Greg Davies) in early Taskmaster episodes—but not just during the scripted portions.

In the last 2 years I’ve not had a single day off that wasn’t for medical reasons or because my parents were in town. I finally got enough PTO to schedule two days off next week, and even made plans with a friend.

Now I’m sick.

Literally wrote a whole-ass song today, arguably I think the first complete song I’ve ever written, and I can’t even get excited about it. Fittingly, I managed to rhyme “coping with the” with “choking anhedonia.”

When I’m depressed everything gets three stars because I can’t tell if it’s me or the movie.

Was listening to a podcast where they were trying to track down an old google vid upload and in my head I’m like “have they tried the Internet Archive” and then 2 seconds later the reporter is talking to someone “surrounded by floppy disks” and I’m like “is this literally Jason Scott” and it was.

Wanted to try out the "neon" effect I discovered a bit ago, and made a few mistakes while I was implementing it. Fortunately, I also implementing a new drawing method that's at least 60 times faster than how I had been doing, so redos are way less tedious than they were before.

What’s funny is I actually had to google this because all I could think of was תקיעה and I was really confused. Like, that was two months ago what are you talking about.

Anyway turns out she spelled it wrong, so, you know, I think we all have something to learn here.

So it turns out the actual problem is I broke ACSLogo. Apparently what I'm doing is just so far out of what it's meant for that it doesn't know how to display correctly and it can cause some wild artifacts. Good news is the export is correct. (Left is a screenshot, right is the exported image.)
