ARC review for KILL THE BEAST by Serra Swift.

4.5 stars

Text: KILL THE BEAST by Serra Swift lured me in with its gorgeous cover and comps (THE WITCHER and HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE), and let me just say, it proved itself worthy and then some. With our brawn-over-brains main character, her beloved dog, and her eccentric employer, this tale plays beautiful homage to BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, while also forging its own path.

While some may be put off by how blind Lyssa is to the twists she faces on her journey, I find her inability to see the bigger picture key to her arc. Thus, pulled along by my desire to see her learn and grow, I personally don't see this aspect as bothersome.

Furthermore, the queer aspects of this story alongside the exploration of platonic and familial relationships made for a refreshing tale. So often stories like this become problematic under the guise of dark romance, and I loved reading a BEAUTY AND THE BEAST retelling that went a completely different route.

With endearing characters elevated by Moira Quirk's narration, I definitely recommend this book to readers who don't mind a slowburn tale where they know more than the perspective character. A truly lovely debut.
