This week in Essos, Arya starts her education at Murder University. It's a dreamy, abstract chapter, but it's grounded in ritual and routine, and finds catharsis when Arya refuses to sacrifice Needle (and all that goes with it) to the god of death. Our episode is up for everyone!

Lovely that @notacast.bsky.social is getting to the part of Arya’s story where she hangs out at our namesake! ⚓️

@notacast.bsky.social sold me on the awkwardness of the sam/gilly sex scene being the point
Also, sex scenes that are weird, awkward, or unpleasant to read are not necessarily badly written. The writer may have goals other than (or in addition to) making you horny.

“Needle was Jon Snow’s smile.” Arya II is split in two, on one side the deconstruction of Arya of House Stark, and on the other the creation of No One of the House of Black and White. But dissecting the chapter is Needle, a reminder that Arya’s heart is still there, if submitted under layers of pain

We have arrived at the introduction of Euron Greyjoy, who kicks things off with the ultimate supervillain monologue: framing his lifelong commitment to violence as a mockery of every god who fails to answer prayers, allowing him to dominate the world in their place.

There's no character in the story quite like Victarion Greyjoy, whose POV is a giant joke on him. GRRM gleefully pokes holes in Vic's worldview, showing how it's made him miserable and connecting the dots to what's gone wrong with the Old Way as a whole. He's his own worst enemy!

@notacast.bsky.social asked what happened to Jon Snow's soul, but neither host suggested he sold it to Milhouse for five bucks. Unbelievable

I got to the opportunity to guest on @notacast.bsky.social to talk about Brienne which was a blast!

It ended up pretty much being my thesis on Brienne and gender structures in Westeros. Plus some stuff about crime and punishment.

@notacast.bsky.social I was listening to Ep. 233 on Brienne and one of the things I love about her arc is that it is the antithesis of Thomas Hobbes’ Leviathan.

I’m not sure if that’s what GRRM was aiming for, but I thought I would mention it in case you were interested.
