I photographed this Creon Skipper in El Valle de Antón, #Panama, years ago. I later learned from a lepidopterist that it was the first known photograph of a living subspecies—the Lilliana Creon Skipper (Creonpyge creon lilliana). To this day, it may still be the only photograph of the subspecies.

In the Tunis Medina, even a door tells a story about power, endurance, and survival. Walking here with my family made those lessons impossible to ignore. #ArabSpring #Tunisie

This alley in Naoussa, Paros, feels like it belongs to the same lineage of dreamlike seaside villages I wrote about in my recent story on Sidi Bou Said. As I put it, “The fantastical village works because every line and color hums to the same key.” #photography

Meet Tapinaspis atroannulus, which I photographed in Cartago Province, #CostaRica. Tortoise beetles number about 3,000 species, and they’re easily some of the most beautiful insects on Earth...iridescent, jewel-like, full of microscopic mirrors. #insects

New story up now: a journey through Zaghouan’s mountains and into the lantern-lit streets of Tunis.

This image comes from the first real test of my large-format system, back when I was in my twenties. I grew up loving landscape photography, and kept a camera close through high school and college—mostly shooting sports just to stay connected to it—but this session was my return. #california

Caught in the act: Sibovia pileata ejecting honeydew like a caffeinated Nerf gun. Leafhoppers pressurize sugary waste in their gut and fire it off in micro-droplets to keep their bodies clean and agile. #insectphotography

I live for the rare days with nothing on the agenda but photographing hummingbirds, and this Crowned Woodnymph, common in the neotropics yet impossibly vibrant, reminds me why empty days are the best days. #photography

White-necked Jacobins have metabolisms that run hotter than a jet engine, so keeping plumage pristine for constant whirring about and battling other hummingbird species is key to keeping themselves tuned. When huge Costa Rican downpours drench the mountains, they preen for hours. #birds

I’ve never been able to get over the Majorelle Garden. This scene from the Villa Oasis in #Marrakech—first created by Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent—shows the intense cobalt blue the place is famous for.

For anyone drawn to vivid colors in nature, leafhoppers rival coral reef fish in brilliance. There are about 6,000 reef fish species on Earth—but an estimated 120,000 leafhoppers. The variety is staggering, and only a third have been described. This one is Macunolla ventralis. #insectphotography

New story on Notes from the Road: Sidi Bou Said and the Fantastical Seaside Villages.

Wandering the white-and-blue alleys of this Tunisian cliff town, I tried to understand what makes certain places feel imagined, and why those places are important.

I’ve been thinking a lot about seaside villages and what they represent in human culture. I photographed this quiet street in Rovinj, Croatia—one of those rare coastal towns that crosses a threshold from merely beautiful to truly fantastical. My latest Substack is about this very idea. #croatia

This tiny hummingbird—the Violet-headed Hummingbird—weighs about as much as a paperclip.

The more time you spend with #hummingbirds, the more you notice how uniquely each one wears light. This species is known for a violet, almost electric purple head when seen straight on, but I love the sideview.
