That’s because you were literally listening through a plastic tube. Old plane headphones were just tubes, no wires. You could put your ear up to the hole in the armrest that they connected to and hear the movie
People don't remember stewardesses handing out gum and hard candy because jets were not comfortably pressurized and your ears would pop. If the flight was long enough, you got a movie on a screen, with plastic earphones that sounded like you were listening through a tube. That was it.
It was. In the 70’s, a domestic RT cost upwards of $550 (approx $3500 in today’s $)
BUT (!!) they handed out playing cards & plastic wings to kids so you can see where the budget went 😉 They didn’t squish you or fee you to death either.
