🤓WONKY STATEMENT ALERT🤓

Gov. Hochul wants to cut New York State Agency budgets (again). But with [gestures wildly] everything going on right now, New Yorkers need to be able to depend on public programs AND the people who keep them running.

👇Our full statement👇 (& more wonkiness in this thread)
On Thursday, New York State Budget Director Blake Washington sent a letter to agency commissioners, requesting that their budget proposals for the next fiscal year not exceed the amount of the current fiscal year; in other words, their budget requests for the 2027 Fiscal Year should remain “flat.” This follows a New York Focus report that already-strained government staff must scramble to enforce new federal SNAP requirements in a matter of weeks. In response, the Invest in Our New York Campaign released the following statement:
“While Gov. Hochul will frame this request as keeping budgets flat, we know the truth: This is a cut to public programs and services. As costs skyrocket and many agencies are already short-staffed, the governor wants public servants to do more with so much less.

“Gov. Hochul needs to stop playing the blame game with D.C. Republicans and start acting in the best interest of the people she represents. Convene a special session, raise the public funds our state desperately needs by taxing the super-rich, and invest in the offices, programs, and services that support New Yorkers.”

New Yorkers’ energy bills are rising at record rates, not because of renewables or clean energy investments, but because of leaky gas pipes and corporate greed.

Until Jan, NY looked set to implement cap-and-invest this year... Then, Gov. Hochul put the release of key regulations on ice.

“She effectively killed her own climate program,” said Michael Richardson, an organizer with @thirdactupstateny.bsky.social.

Washington's cap & invest law has generated more than $3 billion for clean air, water, & energy projects.

In NYS, though, Hochul hasn't released cap & invest regulations. Third Act Upstate NY's Michael Richardson:

NYC public schools in low-income Black, Brown, and immigrant communities are crumbling — with toxic conditions and climate threats hitting them first and worst. Enough is enough.

"Now, when New York most needs determined leadership on climate and energy policy, the draft 2025 state energy plan is a testament to the state’s failure to meet the moment."

While the Governor held a secretive nuclear industry summit inside, we joined with Haudenosaunee Nations, climate organizations, and community members to highlight the costly risks of her nuclear energy plan, and call for a renewable future.

@governor.ny.gov, don’t stop with this $1B climate investment!

We can’t let Trump force through toxic fossil fuel pipelines, and expensive nuclear energy plants that threaten New Yorkers.

Fossil fuel billionaires created this mess--Let's hold them accountable!
nyrenews.bsky.social
Yesterday, Trump referred to climate change as a “con job.”

Today, NY made a $1B investment in climate.

@governor.ny.gov must continue to fight back and embrace NY’s Cap-and-Invest Program to raise vital climate revenue for NYers!

NYC public school infrastructure is in crisis. We must do better for students and school staff.

Today we rallied at City Hall to release our #GreenHealthySchools plan:
✅Create 321,000 Green Jobs
✅Slash DOE Energy Costs in Half
✅Make schools fully electric & fossil fuel-free
nyrenews.bsky.social
New York’s recently released State Energy Plan is a defeatist document that paves the way for expanded fossil fuel infrastructure. Send a letter to @nyserda.bsky.social to say: New Yorkers deserve better.

If federal emission standards are discarded, NY won't be able to make restrictions on GHG emissions from vehicles, which will make it impossible to hit our Climate Act targets: bit.ly/EPArollback25

Sounds like NY needs to launch its pollution cap program, @governor.ny.gov!
Proposed EPA policies threaten NY's climate law
Plans to gut climate policies and car emissions regulations will make it very difficult for New York state to meet its greenhouse gas emissions targets.
