3. Sudden, drastic changes caused by renovations can be disorienting to residents with dementia or similar conditions, even if they selected the changes. Adequate lighting at night may help them navigate better. Consider their safety during all renovations and redecorating.

2. Residents who suffer frequent falls (or are unsteady on stairs and sloped surfaces) would benefit from non-skid, non-slip surfaces. Wet marble is dangerous. This especially applies to residents on blood thinners, such as those with a history of strokes or TIAs.

1. If your bathroom is going to be used by geriatric residents, consider grab bars beside bars, showers and toilets. Toilets placed directly beside windows can present a hazard not only to elderly users, but to passersby.

When I was very young, my parents had a shelf on our bookshelf dedicated to books that were for me to discover. I was never told this directly, just allowed to get curious and open the collections of Bloom County and Calvin and Hobbes and Prince Valiant.
