Today's #OFMD #TakeTwoTuesday is There's Always Something Happening, another fic I wrote for a @ofmdaction.bsky.social prompt for @alexis44.bsky.social. Roach moves to a new neighbourhood & meets everyone who lives there. A little bit of modern AU fun with the crew! T rated, 9k.
There was a “Welcome to the Neighbourhood!” basket sitting on the front doorstep of Roach’s new place, on top of a new welcome mat that Roach hadn’t owned ten minutes ago. He’d been expecting something like it after the interviews with the neighbourhood reps - not an HOA, but not not an HOA, so far as he could tell. The strawberry-blonde one - Roach couldn't remember either of their names right now - especially seemed like he would go in for making anything into a celebration. And that was really lovely and friendly and all of that shit. Good news about the neighbourhood, boded well for making friends with his neighbours, as he’d hoped. But, right now, Roach wished like fuck that the cute-as-shit basket from the Neighbourhood Not-HOA wasn’t there, huge and packed to the gills Not when he was staggering under the weight of one end of an eight-foot long butcher block kitchen counter and the basket - which he could swear hadn’t been there when he’d opened the front door earlier - was in his way. For this #OFMD #TakeTwoTuesday, a couple of unrelated snips from Seasalt in Her Hair, an Alma POV one-shot that I wrote for @ofmdaction.bsky.social. Ed & Stede make a brief cameo, as do the crew of the Revenge, but the focus is all about Alma. I'm very proud of it.

Father came back. Father came back and the peace that had settled over the Bonnet estate in his absence shattered. The first night after he had appeared, Louis screamed almost all night, screamed and sobbed. He wouldn’t accept comfort from anyone, wouldn’t quiet his cries — Mother tried, and Doug, both ejected from Louis’ room as soon as they attempted to cross the threshold. Alma stood in the doorway, watching Louis thrash on his bed, pounding his fists and feet. Eventually, Father emerged from Mother’s bedroom, sleep-rumpled and unsure. Mother hadn’t wanted to let him go to Louis, had hissed, “This is all your fault, Stede,” when he finally talked her into it, had turned on her heel and stalked down the corridor to her bedroom, Doug following her before he turned to go into the guest bedroom. It wasn’t so much that Father successfully soothed Louis back to sleep, moreso that Louis got a chance to tell Father exactly how he was feeling — he’d repeated, “I hate you! I hate you!” as Father held and rocked him in his arms. Alma, still in the doorway, saw the pain on Father’s face, saw the tears slipping from his eyes, and she’d run, then, run to her bedroom. Pulled out the sketchpad, flipped past battles and treasure and cannons and flags. Broken the stick of charcoal in her haste to capture that look on Father’s face, a deep devastation that matched the expression on her own — she needed to pin it to paper so it wouldn’t consume her heart. And then, in the daylight, Louis claimed to have forgotten who Father was, and Father’s face fell, but Alma could see relief in his eyes, and she didn’t hate him for that, but she didn’t not hate him for that. She wanted to throw a tantrum of her own, make Father’s face twist with sympathy and guilt, but mostly she wanted to feel herself be pulled into the salt-heavy sea, lose herself in exploring Atlantis, swim with dolphins and merpeople, call on Poseidon to punish Father. For leaving. For coming back. Sometimes there were letters for each of them, and sometimes the letters were for the family as a whole. They took turns in reading them aloud to each other, candlelight and firelight flickering, making Father’s handwriting appear as if it were moving. Almost two years after Father had returned to his love and to the sea, a package came alongside the letters: several pieces of dense fruit cake encased in shiny white marzipan, all wrapped in waxed paper and tied with plain brown string. There was a heady scent of rum and brandy released when the cake was unwrapped, and Alma could almost hear shanties and the splash of waves against the hull of a ship as she was surrounded by the smell. She learned a new word from Father’s letter that night — matelotage. Soon after that package and the news of Father’s matelotage with Ed, Mother asked Alma if she wanted to learn to sail — said, to Alma’s surprise, that she could see the same yearning for the sea in her as she’d realised was in Father; said that she wanted Alma to be skilled and knowledgeable and prepared for anything she wanted to do with her future. The trips to the seaside now involved sailing lessons, with a rotating series of instructors, all of them with very individual ways of communication and varying skills when it came to teaching. The lessons — usually over two days and one night, Alma sleeping in a hammock whilst Mother and Doug and Louis slept at the same boarding house they’d always stayed at — were always on the same ship, one that didn’t seem like any working ship Alma had ever imagined. It was small, and there wasn’t enough sleeping space for the crew, and the captain’s cabin was ridiculously huge — there was a fireplace in the centre of it, for the sake of all that was holy. An open fireplace! On a wooden ship! Mental.
