Stede frowns, lifting his head and interrupting his blissful head massage to take a look at himself. He has to spin around, chasing his own fluffy tail to see but he realises that yes, he is in fact a corgi. It explains his short legs and how he yaps instead of barks, but Stede can't help but feel disappointed. If he is going to be a dog, he should be something a bit bigger and tougher. Case in point, the crew chuckle at his twirls and Jim grabs hold of him to put in their lap. Stede means to object, absolutely he does, but soon the head scritches return and he is in heaven once more.

He eyes his lifeline, another one that means something about his heart. That one diverges and heads towards his fingertips, the other takes a steep dive and cups his thumb before ending abruptly where Nana's hand is blocking its path. It’s remarkable, he thinks, that they never intersect. "Your friend will come back, Eddie. He's not gone for good." If only. He pulls away, slips his hands in his pockets, and stares at the ground. There's a twinge of resistance as the words land, a rise of heat that doesn't have enough fuel to go anywhere, a fall so anticlimactic that it fizzles on a scoff. His anger muscle has atrophied enough that it can't get a proper running start. He says, "You can't know that." "Sure I can. I know everything." "Nana…" "What? Let me guess. You think you ran him off?" He stares at her, blank faced, his mouth a thin line. “See? I know everything.”

The rain against the windows-triple glazed, the latest, most environmentally sound available, shipped in from Argentina at great expense—is muted, distant, the blackout curtains cutting off the flashes of lightning, the thunder the barest rumble of sound. The party below is almost silent, from up here, hushed voices inaudible, the clinking of glasses gone. It's only them, cocooned in this place, Ed's skin below them both. As Ed sits back to let Ed unbutton his shirt and slide it off his arms, the balls of his feet rest on his fur—it's soft and slick but somehow not slippery, like it wants to hold onto Stede, cradle him. He pulls off Ed's shirt, too, tosses it aside, runs marveling fingers up Ed's torso, tracing scars and tattoos and whorls of silver hair. Ed's head drops back, and his neck—long, tanned, thin-skinned and vulnerable—draws Stede's eye and he can't keep himself from leaning in to kiss the perfect space where jaw meets neck meets earlobe and beard. Ed tastes like seasalt and citrus, like smoke and starlight, and Stede urges him back down against the bed.

Stede's stomach dropped to his toes, a swooping feeling not unlike the one he'd experienced looking down at Ed's smiling face, but this time with a far less pleasant cause. This would be the second task in a row where Stede had ended up almost naked, but this time he'd taken Izzy with him. Oh gods. Stede barely heard Izzy announce that they'd be seeing Ivan's attempt first, and forced himself to look up at the screen and ignore the anxiety coursing through him. Past Ivan was standing in the Taskmaster lab, wearing a wedding dress - complete with veil - and holding a bunch of fake sunflowers. Izzy was standing next to him, hands up in a half-hearted 'ta-da' gesture. "Give it some fucking theatre, bruv," Ivan said to Izzy, who sighed and began to wave his arms, somewhat sarcastically, before crouching down and grasping the top of the fabric tube on which Ivan was standing. Ivan said, "Here I go," and FX drum rolls played over the top as Izzy pulled up the fabric tube until it was above Ivan's head. He wiggled it a little before dropping it with a flourish, accompanied by an FX cymbal crash. Ivan was revealed, wearing his usual task outfit, but with a hot pink headband around his forehead, and a lime green leotard with its arms hooked over his shoulders, the remainder swinging free. He put his hands on his hips and flicked his locs dramatically, Izzy at his side in another 'ta-da' pose, and the clip faded to black. "Man, that was fucking incredible," Ed said to Ivan, and Stede was not going to get lost in the warmth of his voice, the sincerity of the praise. Stede was a fucking professional and he was going to be fucking professional. "We are off to an absolutely brilliant start," Ed continued, glancing out at the audience, who responded with another smattering of applause. Ed turned his attention to Izzy and asked, "Was that real-time? That was definitely a quick change." "It was four seconds, exactly," Izzy answered. "Very quick! Okay, who's next?" Izzy said, "It's Stede's attempt," and Stede felt himself tense up all over again. This task had been filmed towards the end of the location filming days, when Stede had been so utterly frustrated that he hadn't been able to make Izzy break character that he'd decided to just really go for it. Do something so ridiculous that Izzy had no option but to swear or laugh or do anything that wasn't his continuously frustrating on-screen persona. It hadn't worked. Not even a little bit.
