"There is consensus among European countries that #NewSTART has worked in Europe’s favor. Russia’s war in Ukraine has deepened most European leaders’ preference to see continued commitment by US and Russia to limit nuclear deployments rather than no agreement, I told @cfr.org here:

I am proud signatory of @deepcutsproject.bsky.social statement on expiration of #NewSTART. As we Deep Cuts Commissioners say: It is imperative now that both sides agree to continue to respect central limits of New START, which would create more conducive environment for talks on strategic stability.

There are big grand-strategic issues involved in developing nuclear weapons. One of the biggest: if you aim to build a coalition of like-minded middle powers to defend the rules-based international order, then you probably shouldn't trash nonproliferation, one of that order's keystones, on the way.
Criticism of the Nordic Nuke Debate™️ in Aftonbladet:

"We've gone from 'we can't join NATO because NATO has nukes' to asking 'shouldn't we get our own?'"

"If a country like Sweden develops nuclear weapons the [NPT] would collapse, and with it, in practice, the rules based international order."

I agree, btw, that an extension without data exchange (at minimum) is not a good idea. The right thing to do is to demand transparency as a condition, not to reject the extension outright. Russia is likely to refuse, but New START opponents are afraid that it may not. 2/2
