This now has an issue number! It draws on case studies of Palestinian homestay and refugee hosting in the UK. Was a pleasure to write with @sarahhughes90.bsky.social.

Universities can't afford: research, manageable classes sizes, conference funding, mental health support
Universities can afford: expensive VCs/deputy VCs, change managers, external consultants, shiny new buildings, Research Excellence Framework, clunky virtual learning environments, annual fun run

In a letter in Science magazine Hussam Hussein and I argue for heritage conservation efforts in Petra to better incorporate local Bedouin communities into decision making over these sites and value their cultural heritage and environmental knowledge.

‘Perhaps this is why he did it: he was already burning. I guess we all are. God gave Noah the rainbow sign. No more water, the fire next time’.

We will never forget Aaron Bushnell offering his own body to resist such cruelty and protest against genocide. Thank you @erikmbaker.bsky.social.

We use the term a cultural geopolitics of hosting to demonstrate how hosting intersects with dynamics of geopolitics and culture through and in the multiple spaces of home. We hope to use the term to question the multiscalar and relational understandings of hospitality.

It’s really heartening to see editorial statements like this. We need more academics, editors, academic societies, and journals speaking out about the violence of Israel’s war on Gaza and calling for a ceasefire.

Dr Wiesam Issa was a CARA fellow in our department in 2019. I didn’t know him well beyond chats in the hall, but he was a lovely colleague & loved his work. He was recently awarded another fellowship to come to the U.K. but unable to leave before being killed. #CeasefireNOW
