This is the most alarming story I’ve read today. Giving up the fight before it’s started
🔴 NEW: The University of Edinburgh has quietly paid more than £750,000 to a controversial consulting firm amid job cuts - staff say bosses ignored "repeated" questions about its role.

Universities are assembling larger and larger teams to deal with academic integrity issues--mostly focused on AI--while simultaneously holding AI "writing" contests, AI-themed events, "hey, come play with these fun tools!" The messages are so mixed, it's criminal. Because AI is bloated with money.
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

We should also note that no other country in Europe does to young people attending university what we do here in the UK.
I'm constantly shocked (but not surprised) by how little we discuss the additional financial burden placed on young people by the Clegg-Cameron student loan regime.

This is one of the many reasons why it’s such a bad idea to co-locate geography with geosciences
Not only is it at risk of closure, the current plan is to gut human geography at Leicester by merging Geosciences and Chemistry - please sign this!
The geology department at the University of Leicester, where myself and countless others did our palaeontology PhDs, is at serious risk of closure

‘The chill wind from the White House is already rippling through New Broadcasting House.’

@lewisgoodall.com reacts after the BBC edited out an anti-Trump line from a historian’s lecture.
It’s especially ironic because the lecture is exactly about the ‘paralyzing cowardice’ of today’s elites.

About universities, corporations and media networks bending the knee to authoritarianism. /4
I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1
It would have been hard to believe, when I moved to the UK over 15 yrs ago to start my PhD at Edinburgh, that successive Conservative and Labour governments would actively undermine one of the UK's most successful and strategic sectors and run it to the ground. Unbelievable, really. And here we are

So Proquest is now providing an AI summary of the dissertation based on the author's abstract rather than just providing the author's abstract. What is the fucking point except to accelerate the fascist takeover of HE?

'After vigorous and partially successful attempts to save modern languages degrees at Cardiff...and the University of Aberdeen in the past two years, linguists are now called upon to point out the equally obvious folly of cutting modern languages at the universities of Nottingham and Leicester.' 1/3
The latest threat to UK modern languages is yet another faux pas
Nottingham and Leicester are taking a swing at language departments. But those proposing closures have taken their eye off the ball, say four linguists

This is so wrong, utterly heartbreaking.
Human Geography at Leicester is facing closure. Staff contracts are to end in June 2026; students are to be relocated to other universities, or taught out by a maximum of two (!) teaching-only staff. Other departments and subjects are facing closure, too. Please join the demo!

Taylor and Francis really are reaping what they sow. Selling our work to train AI without our consent, no longer providing funds for human translators because AI. They are promoting AI slop in the world so it's hardly suprising that this has happened.
