I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

One thing that is not getting enough attention is that Trump has normalized the idea of the United States supporting the transfer of territory and millions of people from a democracy to a dictatorship.
The ending of freedom for millions is now the official US position.

so UK wants to impose a tax on exports of educational services? Brilliant
🎓 With news that a tax on tuition fees from international students is set to be included in Wednesday's Budget, it's worth revisiting our study from last year which looked at public attitudes towards these students 🧵 ⬇️

Latest wave of US sanctions appear to have pushed China to curb imports of seaborne Russian oil
• US/UK sanctions on major Chinese refinery of Shandong Yulong Petrochemical is key driver for drop
• New sanctions on Lukoil & Rosneft are other key driver behind drop of Russian oil shipments to China

President Lula and I are focused on increasing trade and deepening our strong partnership between Canada and Brazil.

We’re intensifying free trade negotiations with Mercosur — a bloc of South American nations with a GDP of over $4 trillion, and a massive new export market for Canadian businesses.

once more into the breach for Canadian trade negotiators. Maybe this time will be different?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and I met at the G20 Summit today, and launched negotiations for a trade deal that could more than double our trade to $70 billion.

India is the world’s fifth largest economy, and that means big new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses.

Canada has a strong record on gender issues in foreign policy — defence and security, development, human rights. No reason to think that will end. But abandoning rhetoric that was never properly defined is not a bad thing
The world is amidst a misogynist, racist backlash and the violent results of rage-bait laden social media.
Of all the times to say Canada is "meh" about 1/2 the world and gender-based violence...
Then adding Canada seeks returns on investment Africa can't deliver...whilst being a guest.
Unbelievable
The women that brought him to power might be raising their collective eyebrows.

Canada's view on Africa also bears reporting.

I get that dunking on Carney is satisfying, but maybe look at the preceding sentences in the story for context;

great thread on UN-speak and why there is even less than meets the eye in COP30 text
COP30 TEXT ANALYSIS: One way to read dense COP text is to focus on the verbs. These are helpfully italicised – and for good reason.

We now have leaders of allied nations unable to trust a word the US tells them.

We are witnessing one of the greatest diplomatic and foreign relations blunders of our lifetimes.

#COP30 left the world divided, but spurred momentum that will continue beyond Belém.

Framed as the “implementation COP,” it was meant to shift conversations on #ClimateAction. But divisions on key issues stalled progress until the last moment.
