It’s really atrocious how they threw the full force of the federal government at this one guy because he embarrassed them by being innocent of everything except trying to live his life.

Only one of many, unfortunately. But he got publicity so he had to be destroyed.
Remarkable how brutal the ruling against Trump on Abrego Garcia truly is: It details flagrant and malicious abuses of power all throughout. Trump and Stephen Miller were testing their ability to spread lawless state terror. But the court held the line. 1/

Judge Paula Xinis’s ruling temporarily freed Kilmar Abrego Garcia from custody. It also savagely indicted Trump’s lawless handling of this whole affair from start to finish.

Exactly. The full weight of the White House propaganda and legal apparatus bearing down on one day laborer and his family for months simply because the addled despot can never be wrong.

To give you a sense of how big a departure this year, the government doesn't do this for wanted criminals.
SCOOP: The Trump administration is providing the names of all travelers passing through U.S. airports to immigration officials in search of people with deportation orders, a substantial expansion of government efforts to draw on data to hunt down immigrants.

WOW. @haleaziz.bsky.social with a new scoop: ICE now gets a running list of every person who is going to be taking a domestic flight inside the United States from the TSA and runs it through their database looking for targets. This explains the Babson College student's arrest.

Now that an administration that has broken the "willing to shamelessly and repeatedly lie to the federal courts" barrier, I don't see how the courts as an institution recover* short of severe, career-ending sanctions for this sort of behavior.

(*Yes, I know. Things weren't exactly great before.)
How the Trump Administration’s Most Wanted Man Finally Went Free

People are worried about Trump not leaving office in 2029 but they should be more worried about the Supreme Court enabling perpetual Republican rule by overturning what remains of the Voting Rights Act and campaign finance laws. SCOTUS has those cases this term.
25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.

Everyone should read Judge Xinis' full ruling on the Abrego Garcia case. It isn't just a passing legal skirmish. It goes deep. It stands as an encapsulation of the Trump era and of his lawlessness.

I’ve heard from immigration attorneys that clients say ICE guards lay out the WRAP device (essentially a full-body straitjacket) on the tarmac as a threat — “do what we say or you’re getting the WRAP on the whole flight.”

And here’s proof, from Seattle livestream today via @lalabote.bsky.social.

Abrego Garcia is not a "proven human trafficker." He has merely been *accused by the government* of being one. That's not the same thing. And if Leavitt is so certain of these charges, why is the administration attempting to deport him to Africa to avoid trying him in a US court?
Q: Does the White House have a response to a judge ordering the immediate release of Kilmar Ábrego García from ICE detention? Will you appeal?

LEAVITT: Absolutely. The White House opposes this activism from a judge. He is a proven human trafficker

Maybe this new blog can respond, in one of its first posts, to the argument that the term “interim docket” is a deliberately misleading attempt to minimize the (very permanent) doctrinal and real-world consequences of #SCOTUS’s rulings on emergency applications?
