If you want an example of what dictators and their minions do to satirists, look to the great Syrian cartoonist Ali Ferzat.

As the Bashar Assad regime started to crumble in 2011, Ferzat produced a series of a scathing cartoons. He was severely beaten by secret police thugs. They broke both hands.

Ferzat cartoon. A dictator about to shoot a dissident. They both stand on opposite ends of a plank, balanced on the peak of a mountain. When the dissident falls off dead, the dictator will also tumble backwards into the abyss.

One of the cartoons that got Ferat attacked and nearly killed. President Bashar Al-Assad admires himself in a mirror, as a huge giant. In reality he stands before the mirror as a puny man.

Met Michael Kreutzer, supervisor at Memphis Kiddie Park since 2019. He grew up coming here, and his 93-year-old mom made sure staff knew he was meant to work here. A Cleveland rite of passage, thanks for the memories, Kiddie Park. Opened since 1952. Closed for the season today.
