So, I finally decided to stop lurking and create an account. I'm so happy to see so many familiar accounts!
Don't forget the mom jeans!

There's power in an image. To wit, I'm not precisely what you call "patriotic" but I had a physical reaction (face hot, heartbeat a little quicker, hand clenched) to the photo of the White House being torn apart. I suspect that if I feel like that the normies will feel stronger.

This seems absolutely out of pocket that I even feel the need to say it but:

Me liking a post or reply is not an endorsement

This really feels like something that shouldn't have needed saying. Truly.

The whole point of democracy is so one person's derangement does not become everybody's problem. It's social hygiene. The fact the richest men in the West are a mix of grotty twelve year olds and deranged apocalypse fanatics is a problem, and we should be honest about it.

i wonder if maybe we should stop writing post-apocalyptic fiction just until we're sure that's not where rich people are getting their ideas
Don't they have screwworms?
Thanks for doing this! I just started reading Democracy Awakening (Heather Cox Richardson) and the first chapter of the book discussed the idea of American conservatism. So much of our lives right now feel politically high jacked!
Our language is failing to capture the absolute absurdity of this moment. The people who proclaim their Christianity are being un-Christ like. Those calling for Law and Order are not upholding either. I don't appreciate living in a post truth world and having to navigate the absurdity of it all.

This thread on the internal politics of Cooks Illustrated and their competing views on how to make a pear crisp is amazing.
okay. so there are often a few dessert recipes that share things (type of dish; fruit) in common but this is really kicked up for fall. just about everything that isn’t pumpkin is apple or pear & one of the variety of “baked fruit w/ starch on top”, to the point where they offer a guide to the types
The word "conservative" has lost all meaning. The willful waste! I just cannot fathom this purposeful/deliberate destruction of everything that actually made us a democratic force around the globe.
And after gutting USAID and our "soft power" across the globe. It is all so unbelievable.

This remains the funniest way to hear about an internet outage, though.

The first two episodes of the revival of Reading Rainbow have nearly 500,000 views each 🤯

Do you know how cool that is for literacy, for book joy?! We are all worthy of reading, we are all readers 💚

And NOW episode three is out! Take a look, it’s in a book 📚🌈🦋

I told my youngest (who's in college) about the AI video with him dumping poop. Their immediate response was, "all of this is fetish content." I hadn't even thought of that!

The 100 lowest-paying US corporations spent $644B on stock buybacks from 2019 to 2024.

Buybacks artificially boost share prices and inflate CEO pay.

The typical worker at these companies earned $35k last year.

Meanwhile, the average CEO was paid $17.2M

See the problem?

I’m sorry but it’s not up to you to decide if a student’s accommodations are unreasonable. if a student did everything necessary to get accommodations for “anxiety” then trust me, they need them. I once tried to apply for accommodations & it was so heartless & confusing I gave up.

We leave the determination of reasonable accommodation to the experts, and our job as professors is to accommodate as instructed.

In fact, we can learn a lot about good teaching by considering which accommodations might help all students if built into our policies (e.g. extensions and recordings)
