Every time you throw out a device or hire lawyers for divorce, it is "good" for the economy and makes us more "productive".

Our happiness, time and planet are not captured in how good the economy does. It prefers we are busy shoveling garbage than living life.

Americans are holding onto devices longer than ever before, and while it may be consumer smart, it comes at a cost to work productivity and the U.S. economy.

Today we're publishing our list of recommendations on how to build long-lived IoT devices. We're trying to address the factors that lead to your smart thermostat losing functionality or even dying altogether when the manufacturer decides to stop supporting it. It doesn't have to be this way.

PSA: tips to protect yourself from scams on Signal.

Every major comms platform has to contend w phishing, impersonation, & scams. Sadly.

Signal is major, and as we've grown we've heard about more of these attacks--scammy people pretending to be something or someone to trick and abuse others. 1/

By the way, if you aren't using Home Assistant yet, now's a great time to start. You don't have to own the house you're in, you don't have to change any wiring, you don't have to do anything expensive. If you have any inexpensive old computers/laptops laying around, they're perfect for this. /cont'd
I don't appreciate being reminded about the rapid passing of time...

Quick vlog time: Why I think Home Assistant should rename "add-ons" to "apps" 🔥

The problem: newcomers see Add-ons and Integrations and have no idea which one to use. The names don't explain the difference.

Renaming Home Assistant add-ons to apps (here's why)
I opened an architecture proposal to rename Home Assistant "add-ons" to "apps"; and it's sparked quite the discussion. In this vlog, I explain why this seemingly small change actually matters for newcomers, why "add-ons" creates confusion, and what's happening in the community debate. What do you think? Apps, add-ons, or something else? Let me know in the comments! Filmed on my way to GitHub Universe 2025 ✈️ Key points: - Why new users get confused between add-ons and integrations - How "apps" creates a clearer mental model - Zero functional changes, just better naming - Community alternatives being discussed 🔔 Enjoyed the video? Home Assistant is the most private and most powerful smart home you can get, and the one fastest growing and powering the most innovation.
😯 We did it again - we made the @github.com Octoverse report as a top open source project on GitHub! 🥳

We can't understate it: it's because of the community that we accomplished this. Thousands of you contributed to this achievement - here's to you! #OpenSource🍻
