The fact that the English city of Worcester is pronounced with only 2 syllables may seem odd, but what's really wild is that it comes from an Old English name that had 5 syllables and 15 letters. Watch my video to hear it evolve:

What’s the most succesful Germanic colour word? It’s the dullest of them all.

The Germanic word *grīs (grey) was borrowed into Romance, becoming ‘gris’ (French, Spanish etc.) and ‘grigio’ (Italian).

English ‘grey/gray’ has a different origin though: it’s related to German ‘grau’.

A blast from my past - the Medieval Soldier database takes nearly 300,000 military service records from 1369-1453 and makes them available as a searchable database.

An invaluable resource for understanding medieval warfare, society and the English medieval state. Learn more in the link. 🗃️
We built a database of 290,000 English medieval soldiers – here’s what it reveals
We created the database in order to challenge assumptions about the lack of professionalism of everyday soldiers.

‘Black’ isn’t the original main English word for this colour.

In Old English, that was ‘sweart’. It’s the ancestor of ‘swart’, the now archaic cognate of German ‘schwarz’, Dutch ‘zwart’, and Swedish ‘svart’.

‘Black’ gradually displaced ‘swart’ during the late Middle Ages.

Yup: Slicers in #PowerBI are broken. There will be reports out there that return *incorrect* results without anybody possibly realising.

Yes, I have sent repro files to Microsoft. No, they haven’t admitted they are buggy.

It’s weird. It’s dangerous. It’s in #PowerBI unchecked.

I've long known that #SQLServer supports "if exists" when dropping objects.

DROP TABLE IF EXISTS dbo.test;

It even supports multiple tables, like

DROP TABLE IF EXISTS dbo.test1, dbo.test2;

But did you know that it applies to DROP COLUMN, too?

ALTER TABLE dbo.test DROP COLUMN IF EXISTS col1;

What's the origin of 'soul'?

No living soul knows.

The Germanic ancestor of 'soul' can be reconstructed, but attempts to reconstruct its further origin or find cognates have only been speculative.

My new graphic sums up these theories and shows the cognates of 'soul' in the sister languages:

This paper by Meredith et al. (2025) examines global city exposure to volcanic hazards, using metrics such as population and distance to GVP Holocene volcanoes to quantify and rank cities at risk. This data has also been visualised through a web app. nhess.copernicus.org/articles/25/...
Cities near volcanoes: which cities are most exposed to volcanic hazards?
Abstract. Cities near volcanoes expose dense concentrations of people, buildings, and infrastructure to volcanic hazards. Identifying cities globally that are exposed to volcanic hazards helps guide l...

#Vscode #Sql #AzureDataStudio #SyntaxHighlighting

Good friends, is there a VS Code extension that offers a mature SQL Syntax Highlighter?

Ideally, something that replicates SSMS/ADS? As VSCode is due to replace ADS as the alternative SQL IDE... this is a QoL must 🥹🫶🏽
August 12, 2025 at 6:34 AM
I am not alone saying VSCode is wonderful and essentially in infinite ways...However, it is categorically NOT a nice nor superior alternative to Azure Data Studio / SSMS

I'm internally crushed that ADS is being depricated in Feb26. It shouldnt have to be this way.

I so don't love YAML. Delimiting code by using indents has never been a good idea. Just spent ages finding an issue with one space. Also looking at you Power BI TMDL.
