Britain’s urge to declare itself “world-leading” shows no sign of abating as Carney calls for honesty about power & vulnerability.

Nigel Farage was too ill for the BBC, but well enough for lunch & Davos & Badenoch is alleged to have nudged US Republicans over Chagos...

Too early for pub?

In an era of populism, universities make an easy political target. Public opinion reflects a growing suspicion, with research-intensive universities distant from ‘left behind places’ .

A solid base of citizen support is urgently needed to survive.
Attacking Universities Is Now a Populist Position. We Must Redefine Their Moral Purpose
Britain's universities face an acute financial and moral crisis.

Water stress - where water companies are always close to not having enough water to meet demand - results in the ever-present threat of a drought where firms have to take extra water from already low rivers - robbing wildlife of their homes.

This is one of the reasons we should be *very* wary of things like digital ID, extended facial recognition and AI policing. These are tools we should not put in the hands of fascists.
The UK version of “Project 2025” by the Reform party includes a British ICE, a concentration camp for 24,000 people, mass surveillance and withdrawing from refugee, anti-torture and anti-trafficking conventions.

It’s on their website. That’s how comfortable fascists are in the UK today.

🎵I think I’ve seen this film before, and I didn’t like the ending…🎶

The people who broke our country are the same people Nigel Farage is now relying on to fix it.

It couldn’t be clearer: Reform UK are simply the Conservatives with a new logo.

The EU back in the open after being hidden from sight, the fracturing of the rigid lines between political parties, and a sideswipe at Tory Kuensburg.
@pecksniffsdiary.bsky.social time
After years of silence, Labour MPs have quietly been told they can talk about the EU again.

Mark Carney urges leaders to stop pretending & face reality.

Robert Jenrick launched his Reform career by missing his own press conference.

By the way, the other big story of today - bigger than the latest recruit to Reform, whatever Mr Mason thinks - is the launch of Prosper, a new moderate and pro-EU Tory group.

If the week were to stop now, Pecksniff's Diary would already have enough. That's even without the thoughts of the wise men. And for once, we can talk about domestic and regional politics.

(But of course, we take Chris Mason to task.)
