A Blue Jay looks back over his left shoulder at us while perched amongst some bare branches. It’s a sunny day in late December so what with snow covered ground and a low sun, the light is bright but mild. It shows the Jay’s shades of blue and fine geometric markings to advantage.

A Northern Cardinal hides in a White Cedar tree. He seems to be peering at us through a gap in the greenery with one bright eye. The full mid winter afternoon sunlight gives the entire image a super saturated, contrasty palette, which I find quite attractive so I’ve published this one despite the subject being less than ideally sharp.

Thank you Jan - as I was using a 1280mm equivalent lens I wasn’t that close to him, but I guess he took exception to me in any case, despite my being in the gloom of the bush edge. Considering we were both in twilight shade I think his iridescence is outstanding. πŸ™πŸΌ

A Ruby-Throated Hummingbird perches in a defiant posture, seeming to challenge us with a direct stare. His ruby throat is displayed with maximum iridescence in the mild evening twilight. His diminutive nature is clear, as he is perching on a nice new clothesline which is about 5mm in diameter.
